More about Smoke

Created, written and executive produced by Dennis Lehane, the show is based on real events as they were told in the Firebug podcast. Talking about his initial reaction after listening to the podcast, Lehane mentioned that he was not immediately certain if he wanted to bring it to life on screen.

However, what drew him in was the moral ambiguity that was clear among the characters, as he said to TIME,

“What really drives my engine is always the human psyche. I really think this is about people who are turned on by the things that can kill them.”

As is clear from his words, the creator here has not approached the show as a crime drama that needs a resolution. Instead, it goes way deeper and explores the characters in depth, blurring their own worlds of morality and duty.

This show also marks the reunion between Dennis Lehane and Taron Egerton, who had previously worked together in the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ show Black Bird. Besides Taron Egerton, Smoke also stars Greg Kinnear, Anna Chlumsky, John Leguizamo, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Rafe Spall, Adina Porter, and Hannah Emily Anderson.

Egerton also serves as the executive producer along with Richard Plepler, Bradley Thomas, Dan Friedkin, Joe Chappelle, Kari Skogland, and Jane Bartelme.
