Apart from the intriguing storytelling, Dune: Prophecy has also gained attention for the unique and up-to-the-mark costume designs. After winning the Costume Designers Guild Award, Serbian designer Bojana Nikitović is now nominated for an Emmy for her work in the premiere episode of the series. Nikitović has done an excellent job with the costume, which not only makes the characters stand out but also reflect their reality and the setting in which they have been living, for instance, Princess Ynez (Sarah-Sofie Boussnina).

Princess Ynez gets pressured into marrying Pruwet Richese for political and various other motives in Episode 1 of Dune: Prophecy. Nikitović, reflecting on her present scenario of a life full of restrictions and being confined, designed a golden cagey veil. While talking to Variety, Nikitović shared how she embodied this character setting in her red wedding gown. She said:

"something that she’s confined in. It was important to show that she’s forced to go into this engagement."

More on this in our story.

Dune: Prophecy- Princess Ynez’s wedding dress reflects her state of confinement

HBO’s sci-fi series, Dune: Prophecy, has gained popularity for the compelling narrative of the origin story of the Bene Gesserit, and also the performance of the ensemble cast. However, the narrative wasn’t the only part that made the series so popular.

As mentioned, the most prominent dress in the premiere was Ynez’s red wedding gown. The gown is revealed to be a family heirloom, as before Princess Ynez, her mother wore it to her wedding. Other than the striking red color of the gown, its design is also something that would catch your attention.

Nikitović and her team created a specialty fabric for the gown to make it look powerful and, at the same time, elegant. The color and the design did make it look elegant, but there was more to its design. It also accompanied a golden veil that had a design similar to a cage, reflecting Princess Ynez’s embarkation on a life that was only thrust upon her for political gain, making her choices limited to negligible. A situation full of restraint.

Apart from depicting the actual situations of the characters through fashion in Dune: Prophecy, Nikitović also shared that she tried to make the actors feel good about wearing the designs.

She said:

"It’s so important not only to make them look good and right for the scene, but also to make them feel good in a costume that they were wearing."

Other than Princess Ynez’s costumes, the costumes of the sisterhood also tell a tale of their own settings and scenarios.

Further, Nikitović also shared that she has no idea who suggested her name to the producers; however, she was grateful for the job. She stated:

"I don’t know who suggested my name, and I never found out, but I’m really grateful for whoever that was."

Dune: Prophecy is available to stream on HBO Max.
