Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 might not have a release date yet, but the series still kept the buzz around the narrative of Season 3 of the fantasy series. As already revealed, season 3 will take a time jump and will depict the epic war between the Elves and Sauron, the show will also explore another character’s story that the fans were not ready for.

In the finale of Season 2, the identity of the stranger was revealed to be none other than Gandalf, one of the most crucial characters in Middle-earth in the Third Age. With his early arrival, as it is documented in Tolkien’s Middle-earth lore, another question has come to the minds of the fans: Will Gandalf appear in his full wizard mode in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3?

While the answer to this question will be found only after the release of Season 3, there are numerous speculations around this theory, since his arrival in this period in Middle-earth is also a creative decision that does not follow the Tolkien lore.

More on this in our story.

Will we see Gandalf in his full wizard mode in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3? Speculations explored

The season 2 finale of the fantasy series revealed the identity of The Stranger, which was speculated by many. It was revealed that he is Gandalf, the Istari, who played a huge part in the War of the One Ring. However, his presence in Middle-earth thousands of years ago, before his documented arrival in the Third Age, raised many questions and speculations.

While he is the wise wizard that we are used to, in Rings of Power, he appears to be a whole different character, with no name and no definite place to go. Therefore, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 might mostly explore more of his character before giving us the full-fledged wizard Gandalf. Season 3 is expected to depict the war between the Elves and Sauron, with the creation of the One Ring, and Elrond making Rivendell a place to take refuge.

If Gandalf goes all wizard mode in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, his presence will notably affect the outcomes of the war between the elves and the dark lord, Sauron, changing the course of the narrative for the Third Age. Furthermore, Gandalf’s presence as the wise wizard, but still not stopping the creation of the One Ring, will deeply alter how we see the character who appears in the Third Age.

Therefore, there might be numerous transitions that a young Gandalf has to go through to become the worthy, wise wizard who will be a part of the Fellowship in the Third Age. Since the show has introduced a character who has not appeared in the time that the show is depicting, the writers have the freedom to take Gandalf’s story in a way that would make his character more endearing and explore more about Gandalf’s past that the fans might not be aware of.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3: Daniel Weyman’s comments on his character

In a Deadline interview, Weyman talked about how his Gandalf will be different from Ian McKellen’s portrayal, as his character is still young and is in a learning stage. He also revealed that in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, Gandalf will be making several mistakes that would result in him becoming the wizard we are introduced to in Middle-earth’s Third Age.

He said:

"I’m excited for this plethora of possible pitfalls, errors and failings that young Gandalf can learn from. Literally anything could happen because the only way we’re going to see a wise being later on is if he does some pretty horrendous accidental things and puts his foot in the wrong places and has to pick it up and learn again."

He continued:

"So I’m hoping for lots of that kind of action just so that we can see him develop and learn how he gets to be the wizard that we all love."

While waiting for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, catch up on the previous seasons, which are available to stream on Prime Video.
