Netflix is adding another Korean-language title to its content with Variety, a K-pop industry drama led by Crash Landing on You's breakout star Son Ye-jin and Squid Game Seasons 2 and 3 rising star Jo Yu-ri.

The upcoming series is helmed by filmmaker Kim Yong-hoon, the mind behind Netflix's Mask Girl, which became an instant hit for the platform. After climbing to the No. 1 spot in its second week, Mask Girl spent a total of four weeks in the Global Top 10 Non-English TV rankings of Netflix.

Variety will mark a stylistic shift for Yong-hoon, who is most famously known for his gritty Korean noir tales, filled with tension and suspense. The upcoming show will follow the cutthroat competition of the K-pop industry, which is driven by fierce ambition and passion.

The upcoming K-drama will also reunite Netflix with its production partners, CJ ENM Studios and UNU. This partnership delivered projects like Squid Game and Kingdom, both of which ruled the streaming top charts for weeks.

More on this in our story.

Son Ye-jin and Jo Yu-ri to star in Netflix's upcoming K-drama Variety

Variety will follow the complicated relationship between industry executives and fans. Actress Son Ye-jin will play the role of Se-eun, a top entertainment executive who is struggling to revive an idol group after its failure. Her efforts and the failure of her idol group will highlight the consuming competition in Korea's entertainment business.

Jo Yu-ri will play the role of Seung-hui, an obsessive fan whose extreme devotion to her favorite idol group will lead her to a dangerous path. Her character will reflect the fan culture in Korea and how often it can have harrowing effects on the idols and actors.

Yu-ri's casting in Variety, as an obsessive fan, is particularly intriguing, given her career as a former K-pop idol. She was a former member of the Iz*One K-pop group, and the upcoming K-drama will surely be a good opportunity for her to explore the K-pop and star dynamic through a different lens.

While Yu-ri started with a career in singing, Netflix's Squid Game saw her transition into a dramatic actress, where she played the character of Player 222, who became a fan favorite. She will team up with seasoned actress Son Ye-jin.

Following the success of Crash Landing On You, Netflix's Variety marks another collaboration for Ye-jin with the streaming giant. In addition to this upcoming K-pop industry drama, the actress will also star in Netflix's period drama Scandals and is attached to Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice.

Both Ye-jin and Yu-ri are currently the most popular actresses in the Korean industry, and fans are already anticipating their collaboration in Variety, a K-drama that will explore the inner workings of Korea's entertainment industry.
