With God Complex, Amazon is all set to take on the lucrative medical drama genre. Sonay Hoffman and Tommy Benjamin, who had in the past collaborated on ABC’s hit series American Crime, will be taking on the new project.
God Complex will follow the story of a neurosurgeon who will make an unexpected decision that will create ripples in his personal and professional life. The series will explore the lives of the medical professionals as they tackle their complex private lives and choices that make them who they are.
Hoffman will be taking on the role of showrunner for God Complex, as well as executive producing it with Benjamin through their newly launched company, Story Well Pictures. Hoffman has previously been part of several successful ventures, including NBC’s Found, ABC’s For Life, and FX’s American Crime Story. Benjamin served as VP of Television -Scripted and Unscripted at Get Lifted Film Co. He was also part of Stearns Castle Entertainment and has worked on shows including ABC’s American Crime and Showtime’s Guerrilla.

The series will revolve around a renowned neurosurgeon called Gabriel and the decisions he takes that will become the foundation of the story. As per Deadline, the show’s synopsis states,
“God Complex centers on Gabriel, a revered neurosurgeon who sacrifices himself to a grieving gunman denied care. This act of heroism shatters his marriage to a compassionate OB-GYN who can’t forgive his recklessness. Now separated, they must navigate the fallout—professional, personal, and political—while saving lives in a broken system that nearly cost them everything.”
Medical dramas have been doing fairly well recently with shows such as The Pitt on HBO Max, Watson on CBS, and Pulse on Netflix. Doc on Fox has also been generating a lot of buzz. The show has been renewed for Season 2 with 22 episodes.
The Pitt went on to earn 13 Primetime Emmy nominations recently, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor for Noah Wyle, and Outstanding Supporting Actress for Katherine LaNasa. Season 2 of the series, which has 95% Rotten Tomatoes critics score and an 85% audience score, is currently in development and expected to premiere in January 2026 on HBO Max.
The medical drama genre continues to attract more audience and bring forth extraordinary stories.
