Rebecca Cutter's recently released American crime drama series The Hunting Wives begins with Sophie's (Brittany Snow) point of view, after she moves to Texas from Boston. While the move is a cultural shock for her and she struggles to adapt to the new surroundings, she meets Margo (Malin Akerman), the alluring wife of an election candidate and the leader of an elite socialite group of wives.

In the ever-charming and sophisticated Margo, Sophie finds a way to enter the elite circle in Texas, but she ends up in a vicious cycle of infidelity and alcohol. While the show positions Sophie as the protagonist, Margo was the real Queen Bee and the leader of The Hunting Wives group.

After she reveals her open marriage secret to Sophie, the two begin a scandalous affair. While Sophie genuinely fell in love with Margo, she was just a scapegoat for the latter, who was using her to cover up Abby's murder. After Sophie uncovered that Margo murdered Abby to hide her pregnancy with Brad, she finally understood her manipulative motives.

However, in The Hunting Wives finale, Sophie accidentally killed Kyle and lost her leverage over her lover. Sophie's final decision suggests Margo's influence and how she successfully corrupted her, likely earning herself a free jail card in the act.

The show had its fair share of twists and turns, and the chaotic character of Margo was always at the centre of all the drama.

Why is Margo the actual protagonist in The Hunting Wives?

While Sophie moved to Texas for a fresh start and to leave her old ways behind, she ends up in a similar spiral of alcohol, drugs, infidelity, and deceit with Margo, who is the real mastermind in The Hunting Wives. After she discovers that Margo is currently in a relationship with an eighteen-year-old Brad, she starts to get more corrupt with her.

Margo's cheating and extravagant ways make Sophie fall for her harder day by day, until she finally decides to cheat on her husband with her. While Sophie believes that she has found love with Margo, the latter was using her as a cover-up for Abby's murder.

The Hunting Wives portrayed Sophie as the main character, but by the finale, it was clear that she was just a pawn for Margo. After she discovers Margo's hidden tampon and realises that it was Margo who was pregnant with Brad's child (and not Abby), things have already spiraled for her. While Jill's death closed Abby's case, Sophie could not believe that Margo had betrayed and used her to cover up Abby's murder.

The Hunting Wives finale: Margo's chaos catches up to Sophie

Margo's betrayal led Sophie to openly confront her in The Hunting Wives finale, following which she also came clean about her affair with Graham. This really looked like Sophie's redemption arc, and the only thing left for her to do was to report Margo to the cops. While she even leaves a message for Detective Wanda Salazar, things don't turn out well for her.

After a season of deceit and manipulation at the hands of Margo, Sophie finally had the upper hand in the finale and a chance to partly redeem herself for her actions under Margo's influence.

However, Margo, being the ultimate mastermind, went to her brother Kyle, asking for his help in lawyering up. While Kyle promised her sister to find a way to get her out of this mess, he takes things too far and intends to scare Sophie so that she does not rat out his sister to the cops.

In the finale of The Hunting Wives, while Sophie is drunk driving in the middle of the road, Kyle tries to stop her. However, an already scared Sophie drives past and runs him over, resulting in his death. While her primary instinct was to call the police, she realised that she had been driving under the influence of alcohol.

Remembering Margo's criminal antics, she prepares to dispose of Kyle's body in the river, just when Margo calls him on his phone. While Sophie accidentally picks up the call, Margo realises that something bad has happened to her brother because of Sophie.

The finale turned the tables on Sophie-Margo's relationship in a shocking twist, and now both women are sailing in the same boat. While Sophie tried her best not to become Margo, she ended up exactly like her lover.
