Netflix's latest thriller drama, The Hunting Wives, premiered this week, and the Brittany Snow starrer is already the talk of the town. With multiple twists, brooding mystery, and subtle elements of thriller, the show has been keeping social media abuzz since its release.
The Hunting Wives revolves around a woman named Sophie O'Neil (portrayed by Brittany Snow), whose attempt to start afresh (after moving to East Texas from Cambridge) only invites more trouble for her. Her association with an influential socialite, Margo Banks (played by Malin Maria Åkerman), transforms her into a person she never thought she was.
As the plot further unravels, Sophie's life is turned upside down owing to several bad decisions on her part. By the end of the show, she even gets indirectly involved in the murder of a teenage girl (the mystery behind which eventually comes to light). Here's a look at the official synopsis of The Hunting Wives, per IMDb:
"Sophie O'Neil moves to deep East Texas, and she succumbs to socialite Margo's charms. Her life is soon consumed by obsession, seduction and murder."
Sophie O'Neil's transit to Texas is the first step towards a dangerous domino effect that we witness in The Hunting Wives
How often does it happen that someone thinks of starting over, and the first step towards change invites unrecognized trouble? Yes, the odds are less, but that is exactly what happens to our protagonist Sophie in The Hunting Wives Season 1.
Sophie hails from Cambridge, Massachusetts, and when she suddenly has to move to East Texas (to a small town called Maple Brook), she initially feels like a fish out of water. Her husband, Graham O'Neil (portrayed by Evan Jonigkeit), is an established architect whose higher-up is a local businessman named Jed Banks (played by Dermot Mulroney).
One day, Sophie goes to attend an office party with Graham at his boss' mansion. It is at this point that she meets an enigmatic personality—a wealthy socialite named Margo Banks (Jed Banks' wife), a well-known figure of an infamous group called 'The Hunting Wives."
The women in the group apparently have complex dynamics with each other, and Margo is also the kind of person who can be a bad influence. Sophie easily falls prey to her reckless attitude and also gets involved with Margot (which also comes as a surprise to the viewers).
Sophie loses herself in The Hunting Wives (or does she rediscover a lost, chaotic person)?
Sophie is first taken aback when she learns about Margo's open relationship with her husband, Jed, and the fact that they even indulge in s*xual encounters with a third woman. While it was initially pretty uncomfortable for Sophie, but her involvement with Margo allows her to open up further.
Sophie starts attending parties with "The Hunting Wives," drinking and having fun, but only to become a mess in no time. The Hunting Wives finale's opening sequence portrays a flashback from her young adult days, where she is seen spending time with one of her roommates.
It further reiterates her one-time s*xual encounter with a female, and she also ends up sharing the anecdote with Margo once. The fact that Sophie later cheats on her husband, Graham, with Margo Banks sums it up.
Bad company invites more trouble for Sophie as Abby gets murdered in The Hunting Wives (and the truth is even more disturbing)
Jill, the reverend's wife, happens to be Margo's close friend. However, the latter (owing to her reckless approach when it comes to romance) tries to get involved with Jill's teenage son, Brad.
This guy, on the other hand, is dating a young girl, Abby (portrayed by Madison Wolfe). Margo's interference in their low-key relationship becomes the root cause of all problems (and also probably the indirect reason behind Abby's death).
Abby is a simple girl and is someone who likes to stay away from extravagance and all the pomp of the socialites. So, even though she loves Brad a lot, Brad's mother (Jill) does not take their relationship very well. Thus, when Abby gets murdered (and it is also suspected that she was carrying Brad's child at that time), all fingers naturally point towards Jill. But Jill gets killed by one of Margo's romantic interests, Callie (who is also the wife of the town sheriff), and the investigation of Abby's death witnesses a natural conclusion.
Abby never got an abortion, and this brings us to the next big revelation in The Hunting Wives
Margo's husband, Jed, was all geared up for his campaign as the next potential governor, and he was also the main engineer of Texas' anti-abortion bill. Even though it initially seemed that Abby was pregnant and aborted her baby, Sophie's involvement with her brings the entire truth in front of everyone.
Sophie leaves her husband, and during her first s*xual encounter with Margo, she comes across a few tampons in her room (though Margo earlier mentioned to her that she has never used one). That strikes an odd note for Sophie, and she starts digging into the matter further.
As she surfs the internet, Sophie learns that the use of tampons has something to do with abortion. Sophie, having grown suspicious of Margo, meets up with Brad, who tells her that Abby was never pregnant and naturally did not get an abortion. It has been Margo all the while, and she was carrying Brad's child - the consequence of an affair.
As matters further unfold, it is learnt that Margo never wanted to have a baby, and when she got pregnant, she took help from her (and her brother Kyle's) secret birth father (a local doctor, going by the identity Doc Blevins) to get an abortion. But questions now naturally surface surrounding Abby's unnatural death.
The final confrontation
Looking for answers about Abby's death, Sophie faces off with Margo, who confesses to her crimes. In The Hunting Wives finale, she reveals that she killed Abby as the latter was blackmailing her, saying that she'll reveal Margo's secrets about the pregnancy and the abortion.
Abby mentions that she got scared at the moment (with the fear of her husband losing the campaign if the news came out). In the heat of the moment, she found Sophie's gun lying around and used it to fire a shot at Abby from point-blank range. When Detective Salazar started the investigation, the same gun's use came to light, and Sophie was naturally questioned.
With everything out in the open in The Hunting Wives finale, Sophie finds her way back to her husband and confesses everything she has done so far. Though Margo has already requested Sophie not to open up to the cops, she remains worried about her lover's intentions.
On the other hand, Jed has also kicked her out of his house after learning about her affairs. A desperate Margo seeks help from Callie while trying to seduce her and get her on her side. Callie even promises to ask her husband (the town sheriff) to help with the matter.
However, things go further awry in The Hunting Wives finale when Kyle takes matters into his own hands - he wanted to settle all the loose ends with Sophie once and for all. But a drunk and reckless Sophie (who was already on the edge of her patience) runs Kyle over accidentally when he tries to stop her in the middle of the road.
Sophie initially considers calling the medics but later realizes that he is already dead. And with the forces coming in, all fingers will point towards her again (especially as she was drunk). Thus, Sophie plans to get rid of the dead body, and during the tumult, she mistakenly answers Margo's incoming call on Kyle's number.
Margo picks up the phone and can hear nothing but the breath of one person (Sophie). It leaves her worried, and Sophie now has blood on her hands as well, not to mention how The Hunting Wives ends on a cliffhanger and the unresolved questions definitely deserve a second season.
