In season 3 episode 4, back in reality, La'an logs her new assignment: She has to test a prototype entertainment simulator, which Number One jokingly calls “a holodeck.”

In the simulation, Pike is seen as a show creator, T.K. Bellows, Chapel as actress Adelaide Shaw, Ortega as Lee Woods, and M’Benga as Anthony McBow. They are into a detective mystery, which has the potential to challenge La'an.

The episode showcases some complications when Sunny Lupino collapses from poisoning. Scotty attempts to power down the holodeck but fails, suggesting more red flags as the ship nears a stellar flare. This leads the crew to activate crisis mode. The tension rises as the holodeck threat arises and we see the bridge crew, especially Scotty and Uhura to struggle to save the system from collapsing.

As the body count rises inside the program, La’an has to navigate a puzzle that’s no longer just entertainment; it is survival. The character identities are shifting constantly, and the clues are piling up, blurring the lines between simulation and self-awareness. The crew also encounters a fake alien puppet with visible strings, setting the stage for the chaos that is to follow.

The episode takes a major twist when La'an decodes that the holodeck has generated the "Killer" using the information in her mind about her greatest adversary. Therefore, it wasn't just a mystery but a mirror. But things take a dark turn when the holodeck refuses to shut off, begins draining power from the ship, and a simulated murder turns disturbingly real.

When La'an decodes this, she relies on observation, intuition, and ultimately, trust in herself, making this one of the most emotionally grounded holodeck stories Trek has done in years. This is how La'an solves the case and ends the program successfully just in time, saving the ship.

“A Space Adventure Hour” is Strange New Worlds at its genre-hopping best and plays with nostalgia equally. It explores La'an's fears and strengths in an adventurous way, exploring the character's inner world.
