The internet is constantly buzzing with theories about Netflix's Stranger Things Season 5, the final installment that will conclude the Duffer Brothers' critically acclaimed and nostalgic sci-fi ride after nine long years. To make this wait even longer, the final season will roll out in three volumes this year on Netflix, strategically around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year.
While the Duffer Brothers and the cast are constantly teasing details about this final entry in Netflix's most popular IPs, an X account (Hawkins Happenings) has shared an unofficial synopsis for Stranger Things Season 5, which has led fans to speculate about the final season.
The last chapter is set in Hawkins in the Fall of 1987, roughly one year after the events of the Season 4 finale. While Vecna has retreated into the Upside Down for now, his threat is more prevalent as the anniversary of Will Byers' disappearance approaches the Hawkins gang. They must fight against the evil Vecna and close his portal once and for all.

Stranger Things Season 5 unofficial synopsis teases time manipulation
The leaked synopsis for Stranger Things Season 5 reads as follows:
''With cracks splitting the town and time itself unraveling, Eleven, Mike, Will, and the rest of the crew must confront Vecna in a battle that spans dimensions and memories. As secrets are revealed and past traumas resurface, the group must rely on their bonds—and Eleven’s evolving powers to close the gateway once and for all.”
While this synopsis is not officially confirmed by Netflix, it sounds believable and fans are fixating on the 'time itself unraveling' line, which points to a popular theory about the sci-fi series. Seasoned Stranger Things fans have always believed that time travel or time manipulation is possible in the show's universe and the final outing might finally feature this ace card.
While time travel has become a somewhat lazy plot device because of its over-utilization in science fiction, it ties neatly with many details teased throughout the show. Moreover, since Stranger Things Season 5 is being marketed as the best installment of the series yet, the final season can feature time manipulation in some form.
Stranger Things Season 5: The Upside Down exists in a timeless state
The time manipulation theories have been buzzing among the show's fans for years and might finally be realized in Stranger Things Season 5.
From Vecna's fixation on clocks to the ominous grandfather clock's spooky chimes in the Creel House, fans are theorizing that the show was building to this big reveal for the final season. Clocks have always had a special place in the show's universe, with Vecna's victims seeing his iconic grandfather clock in their visions. The presence of the clock is symbolic and its chime hints at the limited time with his potential victims.
Additionally, Stranger Things Season 4 revealed a key information about the Upside Down when Nancy visited her home in the parallel world. She noticed the outdated decor in her room and the last entry in her journal dated November 6th, 1983, ie, Will's disappearance. This confirmed that the Upside Down exists in a timeless space.
This theory was even confirmed by the Duffer Brothers, who also teased that this detail would be tied into Stranger Things Season 5's narrative. They said to Deadline:
“The biggest [question] being we set up in the Volume One finale how the Upside Down is stuck in time on the day of Will’s disappearance. That’s something we don’t answer in Volume Two, and that is really the key plot point, the key question that is going to drive our final season as we try to wrap up this story and give the rest of the answers out.”
If this leaked Stranger Things Season 5 synopsis is to be believed, time travel or time manipulation could be a major plot point in the final season. In addition to increasing the stakes of Will, Mike and Eleven's mission against Vecna, it could also result in some heartwarming reunions with deceased (but beloved) characters like Eddie (Joseph Quinn) and Billy (Dacre Montgomery).
