Ever since its premiere, Apple TV+’s Murderbot has earned praise for its dry wit and heartfelt moments. The sci-fi series stars Alexander Skarsgård as the titular cyborg, who has to complete some high-stakes tasks for humans.
Meanwhile, he has to hide his true self as he has recently acquired free will. Considering the positive reception to the show, audiences are hopeful that it will get a second-season renewal, even though it has not been officially announced yet.
Alexander Skarsgård has now made his feelings known about whether he wants to continue playing the cyborg for another season. In an interview with Collider, the actor said the production team is currently focused on the first season, but he would love to reprise his role if Murderbot Season 2 gets greenlit:
“We’ll see. We’re taking it one step at a time. We poured hearts and souls into making the first season, and it was an incredible experience. I loved playing Murderbot, so I would definitely want to do it again, if we get an opportunity to.”
Alexander Skarsgård talks about a potential Murderbot Season 2
The series is based on Martha Wells’ novel series, The Murderbot Diaries, which released seven installments between 2017 and 2023. In his interview, Alexander Skarsgård highlighted that the first season of the show covers only the initial novel of the book series. Hence, there is enough source material for further seasons:
“There’s plenty of source material. It’s based on the first novella, called All Systems Red, of Martha Wells’ novellas, and there are plenty more adventures that Murderbot goes on that we could potentially explore in the future.”
Skarsgård also talked about the challenges of playing a robot and how he had difficulty in carrying the costume as it was utterly uncomfortable:
“Wearing it was like what you can expect. It’s not very comfortable. It feels like a thick, human-sized condom because it’s rubbery and it doesn’t breathe, so it gets sweaty. I was very excited about those days when Murderbot was in a robe or sweatpants. Those were great little breaks from wearing the whole suit.”
Opening up about why he chose to star in the show, Skarsgård said he was impressed by the premise, as the show was nothing like other sci-fi projects. Instead of following a conventional trope of a robot going on adventures, the series delves into the life of a socially awkward cyborg who does not actually want to complete his dangerous assignments:
“If you just look at the character and you hear the title, and you know it’s a sci-fi action adventure, I don’t think you’re going to expect a socially awkward android who just wants to watch a soap opera in its helmet rather than go on these epic adventures. It really excited me, from the very beginning, the thought of playing a character like that, because I found it so idiosyncratic and weird and unique.”
Apart from Skarsgård, the show stars David Dastmalchian as Gurathin, Noma Dumezweni as Mensah, Akshay Khanna as Ratthi, Tattiawna Jones as Arada, Tamara Podemski as Bharadwaj, and Sabrina Wu as Pin-Lee.
Murderbot airs new episodes on Apple TV+ on Fridays.
