Shawn Hatosy has made a name for himself playing dark, complex characters, and now he's finally getting his due. With his first-ever Emmy nomination for his role in HBO Max's The Pitt, the actor is also looking back at one of his darkest roles to date: Dexter's Boyd Fowler.
Though his appearance in Season 5 was brief, Hatosy's impact as one of the show's most terrifying killers still lingers. And with Dexter: Resurrection breathing new life into old villains, the timing couldn't be more fitting to revisit the twisted world of Miami's vigilante cum blood splatter analyst.
Speaking with Deadline, Hatosy noted that he would absolutely love to be a part of Dexter: Resurrection:
“I really enjoyed getting into those shoes. Talk about disturbed. It’s hard to find something to love about Boyd Fowler, but I think I did. I think he has a real appreciation for animals, dead and alive.”
Who did Shawn Hatosy play in Dexter Season 5?
Shawn Hatosy portrayed the role of a roadkill contractor, Boyd Fowler. He only appeared in two episodes of Dexter Season 5. Even though Fowler was a roadkill contractor and worked for the Miami-Dade Dead Animal Pickup, he had an eerie side to him. He killed women who were either raped or abused and dumped their bodies in a barrel.
Dexter met him during a roadkill cleanup and noticed how observant Fowler was. After a gruesome game of cat and mouse, Dexter Morgan ultimately took him out in classic kill table fashion-but not before uncovering a swamp filled with barrels of decomposing victims.
Shawn Hatosy, who has a knack for finding something to love in his complex characters, reflected on playing Boyd Folwer. He told Deadline:
"That was a delicious character."
Shawn Hatosy reflects on his first ever Emmy nomination
Among the 13 nominations that HBO Max's The Pitt has bagged for the Emmy, one belongs to Shawn Hatosy for his gripping performance. Hatosy has been nominated for Best Drama Guest Actor along with Jeffrey Wright, Joe Pantoliano, Giancarlo Esposito, Scott Glenn, and Forest Whitaker.
Hatosy took to X to share his excitement and wrote:
"You guys, somehow I got nominated for an Emmy alongside actual legends. Grateful, humbled, & a little overwhelmed. Huge love to Noah, Katherine, John, Amanda, Scott, Dr. Joe & the rest of our Pitt crew who deserve the recognition. Honored to be in the chaos of The Pitt with you."
Shawn Hatosy played Dr. Jack Abbot in The Pitt Season 1. Dr. Abbot is a former combat medic turned attending physician. He's scarred, sharp, and quietly defiant; he's the glue holding the chaos together. Speaking to The Wrap about playing Dr. Abbot in The Pitt, he said:
“I’ve never experienced anything like it. The response has been so tremendous — within the industry, of course, which has been nice — but also to play a character who is universally liked. I’ve played some characters where it could go either way, you know?"
On the career front, Hatosy wrapped up a major arc on NBC's Chicago P.D. as Deputy Chief Charlie Reid-a crooked cop whose manipulations and power plays finally caught up to him. Reid's demise in the Season 12 finale marks the end of Hatosy's time in the Chicago P.D. universe.
With The Pitt Season 2 underway and Ready or Not: Here I Come on the horizon, Hatosy is keeping busy.
