HBO: Task cast and character guide: Who plays whom in Mark Ruffalo's upcoming crime drama on HBO?

HBO’s upcoming crime drama Task, starring Mark Ruffalo, follows the unraveling of a seemingly ordinary man entangled in hidden criminal activities. The limited series premieres September 7, 2025.

As per IMDb, the synopsis of Task reads as:

"In the working class suburbs of Philadelphia, an FBI agent heads a Task Force to put an end to a string of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man."

Alongside Marvel star Mark Ruffalo, Task features a stellar ensemble cast including Tom Pelphrey and Martha Plimpton, among others.

1) Mark Ruffalo as Tom Brandis

Ruffalo will portray the priest turned FBI, Tom, who will be tasked to look into the investigations of the recent crimes in a Pennsylvania neighborhood. While trying to catch the criminal, Tom is also going through personal problems of his own, creating a complex character.

Mark Ruffalo is a huge star in Hollywood with an outstanding filmography that showcases his versatility. From appearing as the scientist with anger issues as Dr. Banner/Hulk in the Marvel movies, and also being a part of the Oscar-winning film, Spotlight, Ruffalo also appeared in TV shows such as All the Light We Cannot See.

2) Tom Pelphrey as Robbie Prendergrast

Pelphrey will play the character of Robbie, a garbage man. He is caught up in the recent crimes occurring in suburban Pennsylvania. The miniseries will explore how Robbie can live a double life as a family man and a criminal, created by the challenging situations in his life.

Pelphrey became popular for portraying Mick in the soap opera As the World Turns. He then also appeared in shows such as Iron Fist and Netflix’s Ozark.

3) Thuso Mbedu as Aleah

In the HBO crime thriller, Mbedu’s Aleah is one of the squad members in Ruffalo’s Tom. She is described as a shrewd and skilled Sergeant Detective, who helps Tom in his investigation.

The South African actress has appeared in TV shows such as The Underground Railroad, Scandal!, and Animated series, Castlevania: Nocturne, among others.

4) Mireille Enos as Susan Brandis

Mireille will portray Susan, Tom’s wife, in the HBO miniseries. She is described as an important character who has kept Tom’s family intact.

The American actress has appeared in numerous TV shows, which include Good Omens, Hanna, and Strong Medicine, among many others.

5) Martha Plimpton as Kathleen McGinty

Plimpton is set to appear as Kathleen McGinty, an FBI Supervisory Senior Resident. She is the one who makes the team of Ruffalo’s Tom, to investigate the crimes of drug break-ins in the suburban neighborhood.
