Task featured one of its most heartbreaking twists in the fourth episode, All Roads. The HBO crime drama revolves around Robbie Prendergrast, a family man who robs trap houses set up by the drug mafia, and Tom Brandis, an FBI agent who is leading the investigation into the case with his team.
In his robberies, Robbie is joined by his best friend and co-worker, Cliff Broward, played by Raúl Castillo. Cliff is a gentleman who goes to great lengths for his friend, but ends up meeting a tragic fate soon.
In Task Episode 4, Cliff walks into a trap set up by the biker gang Dark Hearts and is eventually tortured and killed. Raúl Castillo has talked about his character’s tragic death in an interview with The Wrap, revealing that he knew Cliff would die from the very beginning, but was excited to shoot that scene:
“I knew it was coming, because of those conversations we had pretty early on, but I was excited to dive into that script because Brad [series creator], he’s such an artist, and there’s nothing that is sensationalistic, just for the sake of it.”
Raúl Castillo talks about his character Cliff’s death in Task
During the interview, Raúl Castillo added that when he read the script of Task and got to know that Cliff would die a horrible death in Episode 4, he was a little disheartened, but as an artist, he looked forward to filming the scene:
“It was unnerving to read, for sure, but also exciting as an actor, knowing that we were going to have this very meaty material to work with.”
Talking about how the death has shaken things up in the show, Castillo said he is already getting texts from people inquiring about Cliff’s fate, as everyone is shocked by the fan-favorite character meeting his end:
“People are at the edge of their seats. They want to know what happens next. I’ve been getting all these interesting messages from people in my life and their extreme anxiety about Cliff’s future.”
In Task Episode 4, Cliff is horribly beaten by Jayson and his Dark Hearts gang. When Cliff still does not expose Robbie, Jayson suffocates him with a plastic wrap and kills him. Talking about filming the brutal scene, Castillo said he figured out the sequence with Sam Kelley, who plays Jayson, and episode director Salli Richardson-Whitfield:
“It was brutal, but you can only depict the most brutal elements of humanity, if you are going to work with people who you have utmost trust with, and I felt with Sam and Salli, the three of us really hunkered down because that scene was quite technical.”
He added:
“There was plastic wrap, there was spit, there was these technical aspects of the scene that were quite tricky, and we still wanted to stay focused and remain loyal to the tone. You find out in those moments what your scene partners are made of and I have to give it up to Sam.”
Created by Brad Ingelsby, Task also stars Mark Ruffalo as Tom Brandis, Tom Pelphrey as Robbie Prendergrast, Thuso Mbedu as Aleah, Emilia Jones as Maeve, Alison Oliver as Lizzie, Fabien Frankel as Anthony Grasso, and Owen Teague as Peaches.
Task airs new episodes on HBO on Sundays.
