Task Episode 4 recap:
Here are some of the major events in Task Episode 4, "All Roads":
- The truth about Billy Prendergrast revealed

Billy is dead by the time the series begins, but we get a flashback featuring him in this episode. We also catch a glimpse of Robbie's wife, who leaves him in this flashback. Billy advises Robbie to accept that his marriage is breaking apart and let his wife go. This scene shows what the Prendergrast family lost.
But this episode also clears the air about the circumstances surrounding Billy's death. We already know that Jayson killed Billy with his bare hands, but the episode reveals that Jay learns about his wife Eryn's affair and kills her lover.
- Perry gets multiple bad news
Early in the episode, Perry meets with a senior member of the Dark Hearts. There, Perry is informed that Jayson will be removed from his position due to the recent events. But this is just the beginning of several bad news he gets in this Task episode. He also learns the truth about Billy's death from Shane later and confronts Jayson.
Upon confronting Jayson, Perry learns that Eryn was going to leave Jay for Billy, and that's why he killed the older Prendergrast brother. However, he does manage to realize that the gun that the robbers used is that of Billy, as he goes through old photographs. He gets the gun from Cliff, who is captured.
- Cliff dies
The FBI task force sets up a trap for Cliff using Ray's phone. This trip is set in the third act of the episode. This is a tense moment in the episode as Cliff is on the move to make the deal for the drug that he and Robbie stole. However, Cliff does not come to the park as Tom and his force want him to. This is where a surprising twist is revealed.
Jay and Perry have Ray's phone, which Tom and his force took off Cliff's old cellmate's phone in the previous episode. They crash Cliff's car and bring him in for questioning. But Cliff doesn't give them Robbie's identity, and therefore, they suffocate him to death. Actor Raúl Castillo addressed Cliff's brutal passing in the Esquire interview published after the episode's release:
“It was almost like being at your own funeral. People spoke quietly. They couldn’t even look at me—they were just turning away. It’s a gruesome effect. One of Brad’s geniuses is the way he makes us fall in love with a character and then just rips our heart out. With Cliff, he’d given me this incredible gift to be able to portray the storyline of two men whose whole trajectory is defined by their friendship and their love for one another. We rarely see that—their vulnerability, the way they trust each other. And with all the characters on this show, what we learn about fatherhood and family is really special. So it was an incredible gift. It was a hard one to let go of, for sure.”
The shocking twist of Jayson possessing Ray's phone has many theorizing about the identity of the mole on the FBI's side.
- Grasso and Lizzie hook up
On the lighter side, Lizzie and Grasso go to the bar after the failed sting operation. There they dance, and the scene shifts to them being intimate. However, they stop, and that's it.
The fourth episode of the HBO series is currently available on HBO Max. Catch it as soon as you can on the streaming platform.
