The Abandons is Netflix's latest Western drama series, starring Lena Heady and Gillian Anderson as two ruthless matriarchs locked in an intense land war in 1850s Oregon.

Fiona Nolan (Heady), the religious leader of the titular clan, made up of her adopted children, is struggling to protect her land beneath the silver-rich ground of Jasper Hollow from Constance Van Ness (Anderson) and her army of children. While both women carry the same fire in their hearts and the zeal to protect their dynasty and children, they lock horns over the Jasper Hollow land throughout the series.

Things come to a head in The Abandons finale when Constance realizes that her son Willem was brutally murdered by the have-nots, who have also hidden his body from the family. What ensues is a fiery battle that changes the trajectories of both families and concludes on a shocking cliffhanger.

Here is the complete The Abandons ending explained.

The Abandons ending explained: How is Willem's body found?

While the two lead women avoided a heated confrontation against each other throughout six episodes of The Abandons, all bets were off when Constance realized that Fiona's family had killed Willem. After Willem r*ped Dahlia, she brutally injured him with a pitchfork in retaliation. While Fiona had initially thought about patching Willem up and delivering her to Constance, she eventually killed him and hid his body underneath the grave.

Once Garret realized that Willem's body was still buried somewhere in the hollow, he used the weakling, ie, Samara, to learn the location. Samara was concerned about her family, who were selflessly helping Fiona in her battle against the Van Ness, and she had taken an unusual liking towards Garret. In The Abandons finale, Samara told Garret the location of Willem's body. Elsewhere, Walter was in the middle of digging up his dogs' bodies when Garret arrived to retrieve Willem's body. In the finale, Garret brutally injured Walter and successfully took Willem's body with him.

The Abandons ending explained: Elias and Trisha's doomed romance

While their Van Ness and the Abandons families were locked in a bloody battle, Elias and Trisha developed a complex romance, equivalent to Romeo and Juliet of this story. In the finale, Constance had put Trisha on house arrest by dousing her with opium. However, she managed to free herself from the restraints and decided to tell the Sheriff about her mother's plans to empty the Hollow with the help of Roach, the bandit.

However, Trisha had a change of heart when she saw Willem's battered body flayed open on her house's table. She still rode to the Hollow to confront Elias about his betrayal. She could not believe that the man she loved had killed and hidden her brother's body from her family. When Elias realized that their secret was out in the open, he confessed to the killing. In fact, he had no intentions of hiding the truth from Trisha. He was counting the days and spending some last moments of peace with her. Crushing all hopes for the couple, Elias says:

“I love you, but I’d do it again.”

With this, Trisha and Elias broke up in The Abandons finale and it remains to be seen if the couple can reunite.

The Abandons ended on a major cliffhanger

The discovery of Willem's body broke Constance and she only had revenge on her mind. In the finale episode, she kidnapped Dahlia in hopes that Fiona would come to her estate to rescue her adopted daughter. In The Abandons finale, Fiona took the bait and arrived for a final confrontation with Constance.

However, Fiona was not alone. Fiona had a whole army of Elias, Albert, Lilla, Quentin, and Winston backing her up and when Constance realized the string of bullets could be lethal, she retreated to her house. But Elias and Winston had blood on their mind and pushed a carriage full of inflammable material into the Van Ness estate and set the house on fire. As the property lit up in flames, Fiona entered the house for a final confrontation with Constance and to free Dahlia.

The final moments of the show feature a lone silhouette emerging from the fire as the Van Ness estate burns behind them. The Abandons ends on this frustrating cliffhanger and does not reveal who emerged from the fire alive: Fiona or Constance.

In an interview with Netflix Tudum, executive producer Chris Keyser did not solve this mystery for the fans and left the two women's fates hanging by a thread, which could set an exciting sophomore season. He said:

“I’m not going to answer that question. … I have a feeling about how it ought to go, but I don’t want to, in any way, tip my hand. Clearly, one person survives, maybe two people survive, [but] which one that is, and whether it’s one or two — all of those things are up in the air. And that’s the fun.”

The Abandons is streaming on Netflix.
