Season 2 of The Buccaneers came to a surprising end, leaving the audience grappling for more. The Apple TV+ series premiered the finale episode recently, where Nan’s (played by Kristine Froseth) life seems to be turning into a bit of chaos.
Nan is pregnant with Theo’s (Guy Remmers) baby and wants to be part of the child’s life no matter what. As she readies to announce her pregnancy at the masquerade, Theo will publicly renounce his position as Duke of Tintagel to divorce her and be with Lizzy (played by Aubri Ibrag) instead.
While speaking to Deadline about the shocking moment, The Buccaneers creator Katherine Jakeways said,
“Absolutely everything’s up for grabs, and none of the things that she thought were certain are certain anymore, except for the fact that (Nan)’s got (Theo)’s child in her stomach, and he doesn’t know about it. He doesn’t know that child exists. So she’s got freedom. Suddenly, she’s got freedom from being a Duchess, freedom from her marriage, and freedom from him knowing about this baby. So unlike when Jinny ran and Seadown knew that there was a baby, Theo doesn’t know there’s a baby, so Nan has carte blanche now to make her own decision.”
The Buccaneers is a historical drama series that revolves around a group of wealthy American women who are on a journey of self-discovery while looking for love in London in the 1870s. Towards the end of Season 2, Nan shares the pregnancy news with Lizzy, who is now at a crossroads with Theo, as she is not sure how the revelation will affect her future.
Executive Producer Beth Willis shares that The Buccaneers finale leaves the audience with many questions, with the promise of answers in a possible Season 3. Willis shared,
“There’s just so much unraveling to do, isn’t there? They’re all in a bit of a corner. Lizzy’s in a corner. What’s she going to do? Is she going to tell Theo about the baby? Will she lose him? If she does (tell him), does that mean she’s betrayed Nan? Is she going to keep quiet? What does that mean? What’s Theo going to do if he finds out about the baby? …And what’s Nan going to do now that she’s in hiding and she’s got a baby? The thing I’m most interested to know is, ‘How are they all going to get out of that corner?'”
Nan in The Buccaneers Season 2 finale
In the finale episode of The Buccaneers Season 2, titled ‘She Knows’, Nan is still fraught with her romantic life, stuck between Theo and Guy (played by Matthew Broome), who got married to Paloma (played by Grace Ambrose). But Nan wants to stay put in Tintagel, and the main reason is that she is pregnant with Theo’s child. She is afraid that Theo will take her child away from her.
Nan decides to announce her pregnancy at the ball, but then everything falls apart. At the event, Theo suddenly announces that he is letting go of his title of Duke and leaving Nan. He declares that he is in love with another woman. Nan is dejected and goes away. When Lizzy catches up with her and asks her why she is fighting this, Nan lets Lizzy know about her pregnancy. She also asks her not to reveal the truth to Theo and runs away.
About Nan’s final scene in The Buccaneers Season 2, Jakeways said,
“…While that’s an absolute shock, and it’s not at all what she was expecting, there’s a hint in her expression as she’s running away down that beach, that, although it’s sort of horrifying, there may be some relief in it that that actually she’s leaving that castle behind her, and maybe that isn’t the worst thing in the world. She’s saying goodbye to her friends, which is heartbreaking, but it has not been an easy season for Nan or for any of them, really, in terms of what they’ve navigated. I think she doesn’t know where she’s going. She just knows she has to get out, and that the castle is behind her for now.”
The Buccaneers is yet to be renewed for Season 3. Watch Season 1 and 2 of the series on Apple TV+
