The Buccaneers Season 2 premiered on Apple TV+ on June 18, 2025. The season picked up where the first season ended and started with Nan and Theo’s marriage. The official synopsis of the show, as per Rotten Tomatoes, mentions,

“Sent to secure husbands and titles, young American women explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, kicking off an Anglo-American culture clash.”

Set in the Gilded age, the first episode of The Buccaneers Season 2 addresses a key question regarding Nan's mother that has been lingering in the minds of viewers since season 1. Let us now explore in detail what happened in The Buccaneers Season 2 Episode 1.

The Buccaneers Season 2 Episode 1 reveals Nan’s mother’s identity

The Buccaneers Season 1 ending left fans wondering about Nan’s mother and who she might be. Fortunately, that question is addressed in the first episode of the second season as a character named Nell is introduced, who turns out to be Nan’s mother. It is also revealed that she is Patti’s sister, which is another surprising revelation because viewers were not aware of her having a sister.

Nan, however, does not know that Nell is her mother. Instead, she is introduced to her as her aunt. Despite not knowing her at all, Nan opens up to her when Nell asks her if she feels okay. This comfortable conversation that the two share hints at the fact that Nan might already be feeling a connection to her despite not knowing the truth about her identity.

While the first episode itself does not show Nan finding out about her mother’s identity, it is now known to the viewers and can be expected that in subsequent episodes, the truth will be revealed to Nan.

Nan and Theo are married in The Buccaneers Season 2 Episode 1

Nan and Theo’s marriage and the former’s dilemmas about her decision form a significant part of the first episode. While Nan is doing what needs to be done to save her sister, she cannot help but think how this decision will affect her in the long run.

She also seems to get cross with Theo’s mother, who tells her that her sister’s safety depends upon her and how obediently she follows her husband. However, Nan is not someone who is a coward and naturally her mother-in-law’s words don’t sit right with her.

She decides to make a statement at the ball and thus chooses a red dress for herself. She makes this move in the hopes of showing her fearless self and expects that the tabloids will now focus on her and thus take their focus away from her sister.

The Buccaneers can be streamed on Apple TV+.
