Peacock’s sci-fi title The Copenhagen Test finale ended the thrilling tale on an unsettling note. The central mystery around Alexander Hale finds an answer, but The Copenhagen Test leaves some questions unanswered. This may be one of the reasons why the future of the season invites lots of speculation.

Speaking to Deadline, creators Thomas Brandon and Jennifer Yale have recently dropped some hints as to how a potential Season 2 could entail. The series was always conceived to be continuing. He said,

“It was always designed as an ongoing series”.

He mentioned that there are “plans and ideas and hopes” for a second season and teased just enough about Season 2's potential shape.

The central narrative space for Season 1 goes to Hale, played by Simu Liu, an elite intelligence agent who gets hacked by an unknown enemy. The Orphanage, the agency he is associated with, places him under constant surveillance to hold the breach.

His mission quickly spirals into danger and a test of how much he will be ready to tolerate. Brandon told Deadline that the loss of privacy is key to The Copenhagen Test's identity. The writers brainstormed significantly to decide upon how far they wanted the surveillance to go.

But they had to take care of the audience's trust. These thematic engagements are unlikely to take a back seat if and when a second season arrives. As the showrunner himself said,

“It brings up some weird consent issues."

Particularly when Alexander agrees to the intrusion to prove his loyalty.

The showrunner further explained that the backbone of Alexander’s arc is self-scrutiny rather than heroism. The character begins to ask questions about their duty and identity.

The creator mentioned,

“They’re like, ‘Great, give us your entire life. Be a double agent in your life, sacrifice your family, your friends, your loved ones, your body, everything.’ And he’s like, ‘OK.’ And the journey of the show is asking, ‘Should I be doing this?’ What is the line of how much you give to your country, when you’ve lost a part of yourself?”

Season 2 would likely push that conflict further as Alexander becomes more aware of how much he has already lost.

Another integral core character of The Copenhagen Test is Michelle, played by Melissa Barrera. In Season 1, Michelle is introduced to the viewers as an intelligence operative set to be undercover alongside Hale.

She helps construct a believable personal life for him while he remains under full surveillance by The Orphanage.

Over time, The Copenhagen Test reveals that this relationship is also part of a larger scheme. As Brandon explained, the audience is meant to initially believe in the romance before the illusion collapses.

“You start to realize like, oh, these are all the story that Parker is telling,” he said, adding that Michelle is “essentially creating this television show around him.”

The intimacy between Michelle and Alexander ties into subjects like privacy and consent. These are also the Copenhagen Test's thematic building blocks. In a second season, the ripple effects of these Season 1 developments may remain.

Creator Jennifer Yale pointed out that this awareness is built into Michelle’s behavior.

“That’s why she says, ‘Are you sure?’ and she turns off the light,”

Brandon reinforced that these moments were carefully debated in the writers’ room, reiterating that “it brings up some weird consent issues.”

Co-showrunner Jennifer Yale said Michelle’s past was fully developed behind the scenes.

“We had a backstory.”

Yale told Deadline and mentioned how every character was given deep arcs that reflect their journey, and not all of them can be immediately seen.

A teaser focused on Michelle was even shot but ultimately removed because it revealed too much information too early. Showrunner's comments add further curiosity for potential Season 2.

Another gentle tease from Yale left open the possibility that Michelle’s story is far from finished.

“Is that really where she went? Or is she undercover still?”

Another character in The Copenhagen Test positioned for expansion is Parker, the Orphanage analyst overseeing Alexander’s constructed reality. Brandon described Parker as someone who understands Alexander on a deeply personal level, not just professionally. He said,

“She understands what’s driving him."

Season 1 of The Copenhagen Test aired on December 27th with all eight episodes and featured an ensemble cast including Simu Liu, Melissa Barrera and Sinclair. You can stream the show on Peacock.
