The Defects Episode 5 and 6 recap: Se-hee’s twisted plan for the perfect world is revealed
The child shopping law is as bad as it sounds in The Defects, and with people really going for it to have perfect children depicts the cruel and twisted mentality of the people. In episode 5 of The Defects, we see more of how sadistic Se-hee can be as she prepares her 14-year-old daughter to donate eggs and give birth to the President's child.
This isn’t the only barbaric thing she commits to in the episode. We later see her destroying fetuses that had been detected as having ADHD, as they are not the perfect eugenics she is looking for to create her perfect world.
The Defects Episode 5 and 6 recap: Joo-an finds out about his father
Another twist in episode 5 was Joo-an learning that the Pastor was his father. The scene was emotionally difficult as the Pastor was also the one who had beaten Joo-an up in an earlier episode of the series, and was met with Joo-an’s anger.
Furthermore, it is also revealed in the episode that Joo-an is homosexual and was in love with Eun-gyeol, who had already died by suicide. The meeting between the father and son becomes intense as Joo-an thinks his father only thinks about money, but ultimately stops himself from killing the man.
However, the pastor still dies as Jung-hyeon visits him and kills him.
The Defects Episode 5 and 6 recap: More heartbreaking deaths
The pastor isn’t the only character that dies in The Defects, as Episode 6 of the K-drama reveals more heartbreaking deaths. While Ah-yeon survives due to the defects, calling the doctor on time, several other characters didn’t share the same fate.
The episodes also showed how Seok-su was being treated by his father, Assemblyman Kwong Kwan-man. Seok-su is among the kids who are not perfect according to the world that the characters are living in, due to his stutter. This makes his father take ruthless steps to abuse and torment Seok-su by not giving him food and asking him to bark like a dog.
This doesn’t end up well for either of the characters, as even after Seok-su runs away to the abode of the defective children, his father follows up. However, at probably the last moments of his life, Seok-su draws up courage and pulls a knife from his father's throat to help his friends escape from Kwang and his goons.
The action gets more intense with Jung-hyeon’s arrival as he kills both Seok-su and Assemblyman Kwang. It is further hinted that Jung-hyeon is also responsible for the death of Detective Hyeong-Seok.
The episode ends with Jung-hyeon setting the whole building ablaze but not taking Ah-yeon back to her mother, Se-hee. It is yet to be revealed if this was a conscious decision by Jung-hyeon to help Ah-yeon after all.
