Wednesday Season 1 recap

1) Wednesday’s arrival in Nevermore

It all began with Wednesday’s arrival at Nevermore Academy. With an already terrifying introduction, where she releases Piranhas in the swimming pool to punish the boys who bullied her brother in her previous school, Nevermore Academy appeared to be just another stop.

However, the school became more to her as it embraced the outcasts, unlike other schools. It is also the school where her parents studied, and they are connected to the mysteries that Wednesday learns about later.

2) Wednesday meets new people

Wednesday tried really hard to remain unaffected by whatever happened around her, but in season 1, she still got herself involved with several people who wanted to be friends with her. It started with her meeting Enid (Emma Myers), a werewolf and her new roommate with an entirely contrasting personality from hers, which is visible in everything from their behaviour to their room decor.

While Wednesday resisted, Enid still ended up becoming her best friend, who made her smile every once in a while. Other than Enid, she also got involved in a love triangle with Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White), a student of Nevermore, and Tyler (Hunter Doohan), the sheriff’s son and barista of the local cafe.

While these people come closer to Wednesday, they also play a bigger part in the murder mystery that Wednesday solved in season 1.

3) Wednesday witnesses Rowan’s murder

While Nevermore might be a school that accepted Wednesday as their own, she was still the rebellious child who did not enjoy being around people and planned to escape from the school and the town, with Tyler’s help.

However, her plan fails when one of the students of the Academy, named Rowan, lures her to the forest to kill her, as he thought she might cause trouble in the school. But before he could attack Wednesday, a monster appeared from nowhere and brutally killed Rowan in front of her.

But the mystery deepens when she sees Rowan appear in front of the Sheriff after she had already seen him being killed. We later find out that it was none other than Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie) who shapeshifted and took Rowan’s form to save the school from getting a bad reputation.

4) Wednesday learns about Crackstone

The monster or the Hyde isn’t the only mystery that Wednesday comes across in Nevermore. She also discovers a secret club called the Nightshades. While investigating Rowan’s murder, she discovers a passage that takes her to a secret library, where she meets Xavier and Bianca (Joy Sunday).

She finds out that her parents were also a part of the society, but still passes on the offer of joining it as she prefers to work alone. However, after touching a book, she gets a psychic vision about the Pilgrim, Crackstone, who mistreated the outcasts.

Later, during the Outreach Day in Jericho, after switching places with Enid, Wednesday found herself amid the Pilgrim World, where people were devoted to Crackstone. While helping around the place, Wednesday encounters another psychic vision where she sees her ancestor, Goody Addams (Jenna Ortega), and other outcasts trying to escape from Crackstone and his followers and the witch trial.

5) The truth about the Gates family

The dramatic events that took place apart from Wednesday’s dance to Goo Goo Muck in Rave’N dance weren’t something new, as after Gomez’s arrest, we learn that something terrible had happened 30 years ago. Wednesday’s mother, Morticia, reveals that she was the one who killed Garrett Gates after he tried to poison Gomez during Rave’N dance.

However, with Wednesday’s psychic visions, she discovers that if Morticia had not killed Garrett, he would have killed all the outcasts of Nevermore Academy, just like his father had sent him to do. It is revealed that the Gates family was linked to Joseph Cracktone, the pilgrim who wanted to kill all the outcasts and went on a witch hunt.

6) The true identity of Hyde

The penultimate episode of the Netflix series is where Wednesday and the viewers finally put a human face on the identity of Hyde. But before this, Wednesday suspected Xavier to be Hyde, but later was sure he might be the master of the monster. He is arrested after sketches and photographs linked to the case are found in his possession.

Further, after Enid’s push, Wednesday goes on a date with Tyler, and a kiss with the Sheriff’s son reveals that he was Hyde all along, killing and injuring people around Nevermore.

7) The revelation of the master of Hyde

While Wednesday learns about Tyler being Hyde, she is still unable to prove it, and it is also clear that Xavier might not be the master after all. A meeting with Rowan in the hospital gives her a hint that the master of Hyde is someone from the school, linking the botany teacher, Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci), as the new suspect.

With the help of Principal Weems, Wednesday confronts and makes Thornhill reveal that she is the master of Hyde and behind all the killings. She is also revealed to be the presumed-dead daughter of the Gates family, Laurel Gates. She successfully uses Wednesday’s blood to resurrect her ancestor, Crackstone.

Season 1 of the Netflix series ended on a positive note with Wednesday and her friends defeating Joseph Crackstone from harming the outcasts of Nevermore.
