With The Residence, Netflix brought one of the most unique whodunnit stories to our screens. Based on Kate Andersen Brower’s book, this Netflix mystery comedy series narrates the story of Uzo Aduba’s character, detective Cordelia Cupp, who is brought into the White House after a murder occurred during a state dinner.
With her quirky and unconventional methods, Cupp tries to solve a murder amid numerous high-profile guests and rising clashes between them. Other than the compelling storyline, The Residence has also gained attention for its backdrop, which mirrors the White House.
The Netflix show was entirely filmed in Los Angeles, just like another Netflix political masterpiece, House of Cards. Aside from creating a grand set piece to replicate the White House, the show also used several other popular and historical locations for the show.
Here’s a list of places that The Residence used for filming in Los Angeles.
The Residence filming locations
1) Raleigh Studios, LA
With the help of production designer François Audouy, known for his work in Ford v Ferrari and Euphoria, The Residence was filmed mostly in Raleigh Studios, where the most elaborate and visually striking replica of the white House was made.
Audouy had been in the White House and was aware of the designs of the historical monument, and used his knowledge to recreate a modern version of it, which he also claimed to be the largest set piece that mirrored the White House. Netflix described the extensive The Residence set stating,
"They filled seven stages, used 10 miles of molding, 200 working doors, 144,000 pounds of flooring, and many, many more painstaking details all rendered in the service of authenticity."
Audouy also added to this and shared:
"We ended up building pretty much the entire executive mansion from the third floor all the way down to the basement, and the South Portico and the South Lawn. It was just an insane scale that required a lot of planning and management."
This grandiose structure, which was similar to the White House, was one of the highlights of The Residence, adding to the theatrical and offbeat vibe of the murder mystery.
2) Pacific Design Center, West Hollywood
Other than the White House recreation where the murder happened in the Netflix murder mystery, there were several other locations, such as the government offices. For that, the show used the spacious studio, Pacific Design Center.
As revealed by Moviedelic, the West Hollywood studio was used for other governmental settings in the show due to it being easier to reconstruct.
3) John Sowden House, LA
Since The Residence has a political setting, using historical landmarks is the easiest guess. Therefore, the Netflix show using the John Sowden House as one of its filming locations is not a surprise.
The location is popular for its architecture, which uses the textile block system and a facade that would definitely remind you of a Mayan temple. A backdrop reminding one of the rich historical culture adds more layers to the mysterious ambience of the superhit show, making it another important filming location.
