The Diplomat Season 3 has finally returned on Netflix with a fresh batch of eight episodes. The platform's beloved political thriller series kicked off in the aftermath of President Rayburn's death, who suffered a heart attack after learning about his VP Grace Penn's betrayal and her connection to the HMS Courageous.

While Hal believed his phone call would put an end to Grace's lies, she became the President in the Season 2 finale. Hal's actions had a lasting effect on Kate in The Diplomat Season 3 premiere. While she is uncertain about Grace's capabilities and motives for America, she decides to stay in her good books to win the position of the President's deputy, with Hal by her side, being her biggest cheerleader. However, Grace throws a curveball at the last moment and instead nominates Hal for the position, creating a rift between the couple.

Elsewhere, after the HMS Courageous attack in Season 2, Nicol Trowbridge has lost all faith in his American counterparts, but Hal works out a strategy to win his support back. With Kate's help, Hal takes extreme measures to win Townbridge's support, which eventually ruins his marriage.

Here is the complete ending explained of The Diplomat Season 3.

The Diplomat Season 3 Ending Explained: What is Poseidon's myth?

In Season 3 of The Diplomat, Kate was contacted by a British spy, Callum Ellis, who revealed the truth about an abandoned Russian nuclear submarine off the coast of Britain. This submarine needed to be taken care of as it contained the infamous Poseidon, a secret weapon that could unleash a major catastrophe if it fell into the wrong hands. The myth of this secret weapon had been infiltrating the top Intelligence circles for a long time. However, the UK PM, Nicol Trowbridge, was not ready to believe the Americans, having lost faith after the HMS incident.

In The Diplomat Season 3 finale, Hal convinced Kate to present their case to Townbridge and send a drone to the middle of the ocean to take pictures. The images would confirm Poseidon's presence and Townbridge might see sense in trusting the Americans again. However, there is one major obstacle: the US Navy would be required to enter UK waters to take pictures and doing this illegally would be considered an act of war.

Kate believes that the risk is worth taking to prove Poseidon's existence and her faith works. She proudly presents the proof of Poseidon's existence to Townbridge and advises him to let the weapon rot in the ocean. However, just as everyone is about to depart, Callum tells Kate that the Poseidon has been stolen.

The Diplomat Season 3 Ending Explained: Who stole Poseidon?

Poseidon's theft creates a moment of panic for Kate and the others in The Diplomat Season 3 finale. She was so concerned with her political duties that she might have overlooked Hal's growing relationship with Grace. When Grace's husband, Todd, warns her about her husband's budding relationship with another woman, she has a grave realization. Hal and Grace are not having an affair behind her back, but they are co-conspirators who used Kate to dupe Townbridge and steal Poseidon right under his nose.

In The Diplomat Season 3's final moments, Kate confronts Hal about Grace's contradictory statement to the press. Why did she announce that she sent an unmanned drone to retrieve the pictures when she actually sent an Ohio-class submarine big enough to get Poseidon on board? Hal is speechless at Kate's confrontation, which is the only proof Kate needs to confirm that Grace and Hal had stolen Poseidon.

The Diplomat Season 3 ends with a shocking betrayal for Kate

While Kate and Hal were essentially a unit in the previous two seasons of The Diplomat, the third outing was a rocky affair for them. After Grace skipped over Kate and instead chose Hal as her deputy, things were not right between the couple. Moreover, Kate's affair with Callum had further distanced her from Hal, but she was ready to break up with Callum and give her marriage to Hal a second chance.

She had even apologized to Hal and was ready to mend things with him when she got the Poseidon news from Callum in The Diplomat Season 3 finale. Hal's betrayal was too large for Kate to bear, which not only affects their marriage but also the future of their country. Like the HMS incident, the truth about Poseidon is bound to come to light in front of Townbridge and Britain, and they will certainly see this as an act of war.

Kate concluded The Diplomat Season 3, overlooking Grace and Hal as they posed for the cameras, a symbol of their dirty mind games against her. While her marriage is almost over, America stands on the verge of being attacked by the UK.

The Diplomat Season 3 is streaming on Netflix.
