IT: Welcome to Derry is slowly proving to be one of the most compelling versions of onscreen adaptations of Stephen King's IT. The HBO horror-thriller has released two episodes to date, and in these two episodes, they've made it clear that they don't take the aspect of horror lightly.

From one of the most horrific opening sequences to a perfectly established ambience of oppression, IT: Welcome to Derry is making the headlines for all the right reasons.

The second episode also debuted a haunting title sequence for the horror-thriller. An animated sequence set over Patience and Prudence's 1956 song A Smile and A Ribbon perfectly captures the essence of the picturesque, idyllic town of Derry and the horrors it hides within.

The animated title sequence for IT: Welcome to Derry premiered with the second episode on Halloween. The credit sequence offers a look at the seemingly wholesome town of Derry, but with every layer peeled back and focused on, something evil and dreadful appears to be hiding beneath the surface.

The song "A Smile and A Ribbon" adds another layer of horror to the sequence, as the beautiful tune and seemingly beautiful lyrics hide a dreadful message of faking a state of mind to such an extent that it becomes a reality.

"The bigger my toothy grin is, the smaller my troubles grow / The louder I say I'm happy, the more I believe it so."

This duality is in parallel to IT: Welcome to Derry, where the characters, who are only children, are told that their biggest fears they're experiencing are made up and not real. Andy Muschietti talks about this when he says:

"The song is about faking a state of mind, faking a feeling. The message of the song wrapped in such a beautiful tune is dreadful in itself."

The sequence also has several Easter eggs hidden, such as a child being treated in the Juniper Hill Asylum or the red demon-like eyes popping up in the background of seemingly idyllic sceneries. All of these details lead up to the major catastrophic events that happen in Derry, such as the Ironworks explosion and the shootout on the street with the Bradley Gang.

These events might not be a part of the first season, as they are set before the time period, but they do establish the dreadful fate of the idyllic town. These details force the viewer to look at the credit sequence in detail and appreciate it instead of skipping the intro. (And if you're still skipping the intro, you're really missing out).

The touristy title "IT: Welcome to Derry" is reflected in the format of the touristy postcards that these sequences look like, with a grainy appearance taking us back to a vintage state of mind, perfectly accompanied by "A Smile and A Ribbon."

The opening credits perfectly set us up for the horrors that lie ahead in IT: Welcome to Derry.
