An adaptation of Stephen King's 2019 novel, The Institute (both the MGM+ series and the novel), revolves around the teen genius Luke Ellis. He and several other young kids are held captive in a mysterious facility. It is revealed that these children have some sort of powers, which their captors wish to harness for their nefarious purposes.

Consisting of eight episodes, five episodes of the series have been made available to stream as of now. The Institute Episode 5, Back Half, features the key revelation that the book readers saw coming from a mile away: The smoke we saw from the back half's chimney is the kids' bodies being cremated. This revelation will make Luke and Avery Dixon realize that they are up against a ticking clock.

The Institute's front half and back half explained:

In the opening theme of the series, we can observe countless abandoned kids' footwear in the yard. This small moment was a hint at the disturbing twist that viewers saw in the fifth episode. In both versions of The Institute, the staff of the facility performs experiments on children with powers after promising them that they will be sent home after the process.

The facility is divided into two halves, the front half and the back half. The kids are experimented upon in the front half of the institute. After completing the experiment in the front half, the kids are graduated to the back half, from where the people running the facility promise the kids that they will be sent home. However, Luke and other children in the facilities never trust the staff.

Furthermore, Luke and Avery form a telepathic connection with Kalisha, who has graduated to the back half. Through this telegraphic connection, they learn the truth about the facility that has held them captive.

This key revelation is sure to serve as the jolt of lightning that will force Avery and Luke to come up with a plan to escape captivity before they meet their end here.

As mentioned before, five episodes of the series are accessible to people. The remaining three episodes will be released over the next three Sundays:

  1. "Run" - Sunday, August 10, 2025
  2. "Hide" - Sunday, August 17, 2025
  3. "Fight" - Sunday, August 24, 2025
