Paramount+'s drama series, Landman, premiered on November 17, 2024, and has become another hit series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan. The show revolves around the West Texas oilfields and the billionaires using them to become richer, and also how all of this affects the economy and the environment, including the people who live and work there.
In Season 1 of the drama series, an unfortunate accident in one of the oil-drilling sites of M-Tex, where Tommy's (Billy Bob Thornton) son works, occurs and results in the death of three crew members, with Tommy's son, Cooper, being severely injured.
Season 1 further focuses on the challenges Tommy faces with several more life-threatening accidents encountered by his crew, and further, the death of M-Tex's owner, Monty, puts Tommy in the forefront of the company, letting him decide on the future he wants for the company and his family.
Here's the complete Season 1 recap you need before delving into the upcoming Season 2 on November 16, 2025.
Landman Season 1 recap: The animosity between the cartel and M-Tex
Season 1 introduces the problems between the cartel, which owns the land where M-Tex's oil-drilling sites are built. While Tommy warns them that they should take care of their businesses and not poke noses in each other's, the premiere episode establishes that it was not possible, as the cartel steals a private plane of M-Tex to deliver illegal drugs.
However, their plan fails when a rival oil company, TTP's truck smashes into the plane that landed on the road. But that was not the only fireball that was shown in the premiere episode of the show, as Tommy's son and the crew he was working with also encountered an accident where three people were killed.
Landman Season 1 recap: Tommy and Angela get back together

Season 1 also depicted how sincere and loyal Tommy is in taking care of his family. This also brings his ex-wife, Angela, back into his life, and she divorces her current husband to be with Tommy again.
Tommy and Angela's relationship is depicted as combative, but they still look out for each other at difficult times. While they are together, Tommy does not share everything with her, drawing a clear distinction between his home life and his work life, even when he gets more entangled in the workings of M-Tex.
Landman Season 1 recap: Cooper and Ariana's relationship

Ariana is one of the three widows who lost their husbands in the M-Tex accident at the beginning of the relationship. She and Cooper grow closer in Season 1, even after Tommy's warning of how it might look to others, and create more challenges for the duo. However, they still manage to tackle some of those problems, including M-Tex's lawyer, Rebecca, who tries to threaten him to force Ariana to sign the compensation papers.
He still manages to find a way out of the threat by demanding a million dollars in compensation for the families, helping Ariana and the others.
Landman Season 1 recap: Monty Miller's death
Since Rebecca's failure to convince the widows to sign for the compensation and the stress of the business he is in, Monty experiences a fifth heart attack and puts Tommy as the Vice President of M-Tex. However, he unfortunately dies in the hospital, bringing the whole workload on Cami, his widow, and Tommy himself.
After working in the oil business for many years, Tommy is now aware of the risks and knows that getting deeper into this, like Monty, would harm him and his family. Therefore, he decides to help Cami and bring back Rebecca, and together with Nathan, tries to help the business after Monty's death.
Landman Season 1 recap: Tommy gets abducted

The problems with the cartel continue as Season 1 progresses, resulting in Tommy getting kidnapped by Jimenez and his men. However, at the end of the finale of Season 1, Tommy is saved by none other than the Cartel Boss, Gallino, played by Andy Garcia.
Gallino tries to strike a deal with Tommy to enter the oil business and collaborate with him to earn money. The upcoming season will pick it up from here as Tommy makes the decision of whether he wants to stay in the business or not.
Furthermore, Season 1 also shows Cooper taking his first step to enter the oil business, which might be another narrative that will be followed in Season 2 of the Western drama series.
