Ethan Hawke is coming back to television screens with FX’s The Lowdown.

The noir series is set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and revolves around Lee Raybon, a self-proclaimed ‘truthstorian’ who knows a little too much about his city and its people.

Lee often gets involved in other people’s business, as he likes to call himself a reporter and investigate suspicious activities. His mission is to expose corruption and criminals in the city, which gets him embroiled with the underbelly.

The Lowdown is slated to premiere on FX on September 23, 2025. If you are excited to watch the show, here are all the details you need, including its release date, plot, and casting.


The release date of The Lowdown

The premiere date of The Lowdown has been confirmed as September 23, 2025. The show will debut on FX with two episodes, followed by new episodes weekly on Tuesdays at 9 PM ET / PT. There will be a total of 8 episodes.

A day after the television broadcast, the episodes will be available to stream on Hulu. The streaming platform can be subscribed to through an ad-supported plan, which costs $9.99 per month, or an ad-free plan, which costs $18.99 per month.


The plot of The Lowdown

The series follows Lee Raybon, who likes to call himself ‘truthstorian.’ He is based in Tulsa and has taken it upon himself to find answers to some questionable activities in the city. Lee runs a small bookstore that also serves as a community place for locals. His obsession with chasing the truth often puts him in danger and causes issues with his ex, Samantha.

However, the two stay united when it comes to parenting their 14-year-old daughter, Francis, who is as curious as her father and wants to join him on his adventures. Things take a dark turn when Dale Washberg, a powerful man in the city, dies under suspicious circumstances.

As Lee unofficially investigates the case, he uncovers dark secrets about the Washberg family and attracts unwanted attention.

The official synopsis of the show reads:

Ethan Hawke stars in the lead role of Lee Raybon. Kaniehtiio Horn plays his ex, Samantha, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong stars as their daughter, Francis. Tim Blake Nelson portrays Dale Washberg, the man who dies, and Jeanne Tripplehorn plays his widow, Betty Jo. Kyle MacLachlan stars as Donald Washberg, Dale’s brother.
