The Mighty Nein Episode 5 recap: Caleb’s real name and backstory revealed

The Mighty Nein delivered one of the darkest episodes through the fifth one, "Little Spark". It picks up right after Owelia ambushed the group in the fourth episode, "The Mighty Nein". The group tries to interrogate Owelia throughout the 46-minute episode. But, interrogation does not go in the group's favor, plus some of their suspicions about a member are confirmed by Owelia.

The said members they are suspicious about is none other than the magic user Caleb Widogast. Moreover, we also learn his real name in addition to the backstory, involving his family and the Volstrucker.

"After the Mighty Nein break out of prison and subdue a Volstrucker assassin, Beau interrogates her brutally. But as the questioning ramps up, Beau’s suspicions turn to Caleb as his connection with the Empire and dark past are unraveled."

Here are some of the major revelations in "Little Spark":

• The group fights Owelia

The Mighty Nein face off against Owelia in the fifth episode again. While the Volstrucker has been a tough opponent for the group until now, the latter manages to subdue Owelia by temporarily paralyzing her. In fact, it is Beau who finally delivers the par1alyzing blow to Owelia, in revenge for the former's defeat in a previous battle. However, the Mighty Nein win at a major cost.

• Fjord is poisoned

Despite losing, Owelia delivers two crushing blows to the group in this episode: poisoning Fjord and exposing Caleb. While the half-orc warlock survives the poisoning, he is still weak as Nott tends to him. Meanwhile, the Nein interrogate Owelia, but the Volstrucker turns the tables on them by revealing Caleb's dark secret.

• Caleb was a Volstrucker

Beau was already distrustful of Caleb, and this episode only adds to this as Owelia uses Beau's suspicions to drive a wedge in the Nein during interrogation. Owelia outs Caleb as a former Volstrucker, much to the shock of the group. The female Volstrucker uses this moment of the group suspecting Caleb to escape.

• Caleb and Owelia's final fight

Caleb follows Owelia to a forest where the two have one final battle. She threatens Caleb that the Volstrucker will send more assassins after him. However, an unbothered Caleb burns her to death. Before dying, Owelia sends him his real name, Bren.

• Bren reveals his backstory to the Nein

"Caleb" returns to the Nein after killing Owelia and agrees to reveal his past to the group. The flashback reveals that young Bren helped his parents in farming, but his powers were discovered by Trent Ikithon, who invited the young man to Soltryce Academy. There, he meets Astrid and Eadwulf and forms a romantic relationship with both of them.

He is trained to be a Volstrucker in the academy, the assassins who execute those resisting the empire. One day, Bren receives an order to kill rebels in his hometown that includes his parents. The young Volstrucker kills his parents and the family cat by burning down his childhood home. Experiencing a psychotic breakdown, Bren also burns Astrid and Eadwulf.
