HBO is gearing up to release another haunting docuseries titled "The Mortician" that dives into the true story of David Sconce and the Lamb Funeral Home in Pasadena, California. Directed by Joshua Rofé, it will uncover how a once-trusted family-run mortuary becomes the center of a scandal in the 1980s.
In recent years, HBO has been releasing some of the must-watch documentaries based on real events, and The Mortician is no exception. Scheduled to come out on June 1, 2025 this three-part docuseries will explore David Sconce inheriting the Lamb Funeral Home from his family, only to misuse it.
Soon after owning the place, he took over the business, and this marked the beginning of a series of unethical and illegal practices that shocked the public and disrupted the funeral industry. As the speaker says in the recently released trailer:
"The unfortunate reality is, like any other occupation, there are some bad apples."
Interestingly, HBO's The Mortician doesn't rely on secondhand accounts. What makes it a must-watch is that the docuseries will feature David Sconce himself as he talks about his actions.
The trailer also reveals how people nearby started complaining about him as they suspected Sconce was burning flesh. Not only this, one of the speakers accused him of blackmailing rival morticians.

HBO's The Mortician: Release timeline and streaming availability

The Mortician begins its run on Sunday, June 1, 2025 at 9:00 PM ET/PT and follows a weekly release format. The second and third episodes will arrive on June 8 and June 15, respectively, each airing on a Sunday night.
Whether you’re tuning in through traditional cable or streaming from your device, all three episodes will be available on HBO’s streaming service, Max, from the date of each episode’s release. Each part will take viewers step-by-step through the rise and eventual collapse of the Lamb Funeral Home.
Here's how HBO will cover the true crime from Episodes 1 to 3:
Episode 1: Focuses on how David Sconce came to control the family business and the early signs of the disturbing operations he put in place.
Episode 2: Shifts to a turning point, the crematorium catches fire, drawing attention. This episode explores the investigation that followed, including the arrests and the building evidence against Sconce and his secret operation.
Episode 3: Deals with the legal proceedings that followed. It covers the court trials, convictions and the long-lasting damage felt by more than 20,000 families whose trust was violated.
The docuseries aims to highlight an industry that rarely sees this kind of public exposure. Funeral services are typically seen as private and sacred, but The Mortician reveals how deeply they can be affected by greed and power.

The docuseries will focus on the modest, family-run mortuary in California, soon making headlines after David Sconce takes over. His actions didn't just hurt multiple families but also ruined the Sconce family's reputation.
As seen in the trailer, Scorne has been released from prison and will reveal why he indulged in illegal practices. His voice is central to the series, adding a rare layer of firsthand perspective. The man can be heard saying:
"I don't put nay value in anybody after they're gone and dead, as they shouldn't when I'm gone and dead. Love 'em when they're here. Period."
Alongside his testimony, viewers will also hear from former employees, devastated families, and experts from the funeral services industry. Together, they paint a disturbing yet necessary picture of what really happened behind closed doors.
One of the most horrific parts includes cases of illegal mass cremations, ashes that never went back to families, and the psychological and financial exploitation of clients. The scandal ignited outrage and ultimately led to the re-evaluation of the standards followed in the business.
