The Perfect Couple Season 2 gets a disappointing update as showrunner Joanna Calo exits the project

Netflix’s The Perfect Couple Season 2 has reportedly hit a roadblock. Deadline recently reported that Joanna Calo, the potential Season 2 writer and showrunner, has exited the project.

It was earlier reported that The Perfect Couple Season 2 will adapt another of Elin Hilderbrand’s novels called Swan Song. After a successful Season 1, starring Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, the project was one of the most anticipated shows.

However, Netflix has not commented on the recent development news of The Perfect Couple Season 2, as they have not confirmed the project is in the works yet.

Joanna Calo exits The Perfect Couple Season 2

It was first reported in March 2025 that a potential The Perfect Couple Season 2 was in the works, and Joanna Calo, one of the showrunners of FX’s popular series The Bear, was tapped as the writer and showrunner. It was also revealed that Season 2 would have been an adaptation of Swan Song, another best-selling novel by Hilderbrand.

The plot of Swan Song revolves around the Richardson family, who have purchased a multi-million dollar summer home and are renowned for hosting extravagant parties. However, their perfect world ends in chaos when the house catches fire and one of their employees disappears during the mayhem.

However, the adaptation has hit a setback as Deadline reported that Calo has now exited the project as writer and showrunner, leaving The Perfect Couple sequel series without a writer.

While there is no official confirmation of Season 2 being in the works, the Hollywood Reporter had earlier revealed that The Perfect Couple would be competing in the Drama series category in the Emmys rather than the Limited series category, resulting in speculations of a potential Season 2.

The first Season was helmed by Jenna Lamia, who served as the showrunner, writer, and producer of the series. The murder mystery drama tells the story of a death in the Winbury family’s Summerland mansion, which halts the upcoming wedding and makes everyone a suspect.

Season 1 premiered on September 5, 2024, and was one of the top shows on Netflix.

It starred Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Meghann Fahy, Dakota Fanning, Ishaan Khatter, and Billy Howle, among many others. Kidman and the director, Susanne Bier, also served as executive producers of the Netflix series.
