Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brought back Tolkien lore to the screen, this time in a series format. The series narrates the storylines around the creation of the Rings of Power and the epic war between the Elves and Sauron.

While it brought back numerous fan-favorite characters such as Galadriel, Elrond, and even Gandalf, it has also created characters that are not canon to the LOTR lore. For instance, Adar, the other villain from the series, defeated Sauron once to save the Orcs.

However, Adar, played by Joseph Mawle (Season 1) and Sam Hazeldine (Season 2), who had ambitious goals for Orcs, died tragically and poetically at the end of Season 2.

More on this in our story.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: Who was Adar? Character explored

In Season 1 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Joseph Mawle’s character, Adar, is introduced at the end of Episode 3. He is one of the first corrupted Elves by Dark Lord Morgoth. In the first season, after betraying Sauron, he goes on a journey to find a home for the freed Orcs, whom he considers his children.

Adar’s journey in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 1 is spent in search of a mysterious hilt that would help him achieve his goal. However, even after destroying the Southlands and finding the hilt, he still had to let it go, due to the forces of Numenor, who came to save the Southlands from him and his Orc army. He asks one of his loyal human supporters to hide the hilt, who places it in an altar in the watch-tower, which results in a flood that triggers a volcanic eruption, creating the infamous Mordor and Mount Doom.

In Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Sam Hazeldine replaces Mawle as Adar and explores more about the character. After finding out about Sauron’s presence in Eregion, Adar decides to attack the kingdom, which results in one of the epic fights shown in the Prime Video series.

In Season 2, Episode 6, he even tries to ally with Galadriel to eliminate Sauron once and for all, using her Ring of Power. Galadriel unintentionally reveals Sauron’s identity to Adar, resulting in the siege of Eregion by his Orc Army. However, she later tries to ally with him to end Sauron, but at the time, Adar had lost all of his powers over his own children, who decide to side with Sauron.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: How did Adar die?

Adar might have appeared as one of the sympathetic villains of the LOTR universe due to his compassion toward the Orcs. In a flashback scene in the premiere episode of Season 2, it is revealed that Adar was furious with Sauron’s unjust treatment of the Orcs and ended up betraying him to set the Orcs free from him. He stabbed Sauron with Morgoth’s crown to kill his own master.

Later, in the finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Sauron makes the Orc army side with him, rather than Adar. In a tragic but poetic callback to Sauron’s death, Adar is stabbed to death, just like Sauron. The scene was more tragic as he was killed by the Orcs, whom he considered his children.
