While the production of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 is still underway, the anticipation of fans of the series has not died down yet. As revealed, Season 3 will cover the war between the Elves and the Dark Lord, Sauron. In addition to the grand-scale storyline from Tolkien’s lore, The Rings of Power brought back numerous characters that the fans of LOTR were already aware of.
The characters included a fan favorite, Gandalf. However, there was one more wizard, who the fans thought might have been another iconic Wizard from the Third Age, i.e., Saruman. But the discourse around the Dark Wizard (Ciarán Hinds) shown in The Rings of Power was shut down by the creators of the show, who revealed that it will not be Saruman.
More on this in our story.
Will Dark Wizard turn out to be Saruman in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3? Speculations explored
In The Rings of Power Season 2, other than the Stranger, there was one more wizard who might have caught your eye. He was in search of the Stranger to make him join him and got angry at him for his refusal. Due to his seemingly evil storyline that hints at him joining Sauron as his ally (similar to Saruman’s in the Third Age). Further, this also hints that we might also see a confrontation between Gandalf and the Dark Wizard in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, hinting at another similarity with Saruman’s story.
But these were just fan theories until the creators Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne revealed that the Dark Wizard will not be Saruman. During a Reddit Q&A, the creators were asked if in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3, the Dark Wizard might turn out to be Saruman.
Patrick McKay said:
"I think it's hard to say anything is 100%, but we have no plans or intention to have him be Saruman. We are not thinking of him as Saruman. We know there are five wizards talked about in The Lord of the Rings. One of them is Saruman, one of them is Gandalf, one of them is Radagast, and then there are two others. It is our expectation that he will be one of those two others."
To add to this, Payne shared how Saruman's inclusion in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 will negatively impact his story in the Third Age, during the war of the One Ring.
He shared:
"What I'll say is, I think it would be difficult logically to see how he could be Saruman. It would be sort of a "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"ofor Gandalf. If the Dark Wizard was going to be Saruman, then he would be an evil wizard that Gandalf was interacting with and fighting in the Second Age. And then he'd have to become good again and regain Gandalf’s trust, only to later turn evil again and betray him. It would just sort of strain credulity."
McKay lastly added:
"It's just very hard to imagine that the Dark Wizard would be Saruman. I think while we want to be open as creators to every corner of the legendarium, I don't think that's going to happen."
Therefore, as per the showrunners, the Dark Wizard will not be Saruman but would definitely be one blue wizards, whose stories are not expanded enough in Tolkien’s writings, allowing them to create an independent story around him in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3.
