Based on Neil Gaiman's critically renowned comic book published by DC Comics, The Sandman is a fantasy drama series available on Netflix. Allan Heinberg, David S. Goyer, and Gaiman have developed the show.
Dream (Morpheus), is portrayed by the actor Tom Sturridge, with Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, and Boyd Holbrook playing important supporting parts. The show explores Dream's position in the cosmos by following this enigmatic and formidable character.
Despite recent s**ual harassment accusations against co-creator Neil Gaiman which has led to the delay of his other shows, the decision to conclude The Sandman with Season 2 was taken three years ago. According to showrunner Allan Heinberg, the plot was always intended to be a two-season arc centered around Dream.
"It was a decision we made three years ago," Heinberg said.
More about The Sandman having only 2 seasons
The second season of Netflix's The Sandman will be its final installments. This was particularly revealed by the showrunner, Allan Heinberg, in one of the most recent interviews with Entertainment Weekly on May 28, 2025, and he also revealed this specific decision was taken some years ago.
The Sandman, based on Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg's famed comic, debuted in 2022 and rapidly developed a devoted fan base. Some of the show's cast include Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne and Patton Oswalt as Matthew.
However, once significant allegations were made against Gaiman for s**ual misconduct, discussion increased about when the program might end.
In response, Heinberg said that the choice was made three years prior. The goal of the creative team was always to produce a concentrated tale about Dream. The creators created a distinct two-season narrative that emphasizes Dream's most pivotal events because he is missing from a significant portion of the original comics.
Moreover, Heinberg emphasized that the production timeline and story structure were never influenced by external events. He said:
"I can't say that it affected our process, which is scheduled years in advance. These are your delivery dates and you just keep going...Every production is its own little island.”
This means that work on the show continued as planned. Despite the unfortunate timing of the announcement, the end of The Sandman was always part of the original vision and the show's season 2 will be released in two parts, starting July 3, 2025, and will bring the series to its planned conclusion.
