Episode 4 of The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 ended on a rocky note for the mother-daughter duo.
Laurel is concerned about Belly and Jeremiah marrying so young, and that's what led to their disagreement. In the hallway, Laurel argues with Belly and shares the reason why she disapproves of their marriage plans.
"Because you're still a child. You don't even know yourself yet. How could you possibly know who you would want to with be forever?"
To which Belly firmly replies,
"I know who I want and I am marrying him."
Laurel then warns Belly that if she still decides to go along with her marriage plans, she will stay out of it. The emotional confrontation ends on a pretty harsh note when Belly tells Laurel that she's unwilling to participate because she no longer needs her approval. And finally, Belly walks away and leaves her home with Jere.
Jackie Chung, who plays Laurel in The Summer I Turned Pretty, reveals the reason that caused the mother-daughter fallout.
Jackie Chung breaks down Belly and Laurel's fallout in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 4
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, The Summer I Turned Pretty star Jackie Chung opened up about what led to Belly and Laurel's fallout. And the reason is nothing but concern. She's concerned that Belly and Jeremiah are too young and indecisive to make pivotal decisions like marriage that could alter their future forever. She explains,
"Laurel obviously has lived through that time and knows that there’s so much growth that happens and there’s so much life to explore, like on-campus life, off-campus life. And I think she was really just hoping that Belly would take advantage of that, but knowing in the back of her mind that having her boyfriend right there would make it hard to do that."
Laurel's fears come true when Belly and Jeremiah announce their engagement in Season 3. When asked about what Laurel plans for her daughter, she explains how she wants Belly to explore her life, gather experience, and then make a decision. Neither Team Conrad nor Team Jeremiah, Chung thinks Laurel is Team Belly, and she wants the absolute best for her daughter, like any mother.
"I feel like Laurel thinks that this is a big moment in Belly’s life to figure out who she is and to just explore all her options. I think after Belly has some experiences, if she comes back to one of them when she really knows who she is and what she wants and what she wants out of a relationship, if one of those is right, then it’s great. And if not, then that’s also great. She really is just fully, fully team Belly."
Additionally, Chung also feels that Laurel does not want Belly to regret her decision or go through turmoil similar to what she faced. For Laurel, Belly is still her baby, and she wants to protect her by all means. To know what happens next, watch The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 Episode 5 on August 6, 2025.
