Genuine Fraud is officially bringing one of The Summer I Turned Pretty’s most beloved faces on board. Rain Spencer, who fans loved as Taylor Madison Jewel, is set to lead Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming psychological thriller.
The show will be based on E. Lockhart’s bestselling novel of the same name, and it’s a big new move for the TSITP rising star.
From Taylor to thrills: Rain Spencer leads Genuine Fraud
Rain Spencer’s journey with acting has been nothing short of impressive. She first won our hearts as Belly's best friend, Taylor Madison Jewel, in The Summer I Turned Pretty. Her friendship with Belly (Lola Tung) and her chemistry with Steven (Sean Kaufman) made her one of the show’s most interesting characters and also a fan favourite.
Now, Spencer’s taking a new, never-before-seen energy and is putting it into something completely different from what we've previously seen of her on Cousins Beach with Belly and the guys.
This new project gives her a chance to play a lead as a young woman who molds herself into the life of a wealthy heiress who unexpectedly vanishes.
Unlike the beachy and romantic energy of The Summer I Turned Pretty, Genuine Fraud will delve into heavier YA themes, such as deception and identity. It’s the kind of role that lets Spencer flex a whole new side of her talent.
Behind the camera, the creative team is also comprised of extraordinary names associated with the show. Sinead Daly, who was one of the writers from TSITP Season 3, has created and written the new Amazon MGM series.
E. Lockhart, whose We Were Liars became a massive hit on Amazon, also joins the project as an executive producer along with Rain Spencer. With Patrick Moran and Lynley Bird from PKM Productions, this team is on its way to shape Genuine Fraud into Amazon’s next big YA obsession.
Why Genuine Fraud could be Amazon’s next breakout YA hit
There’s a lot of buzz around Genuine Fraud, and for good reason. The show promises a darker experience, which is what will keep you constantly guessing about who’s telling the truth and who isn't.
The show’s narrative and perspectives make it distinct from most YA stories available. With Sinead Daly’s writing and E. Lockhart’s love for storytelling, the show could easily pull in fans ranging from older teens to adults.
For Amazon, this new show feels like the perfect bridge between the romantic hits and the more suspenseful ones.
Although there’s no confirmed release date yet, anticipation is already high. If you loved The Summer I Turned Pretty and We Were Liars, this one’s already at the top of your must-watch list.
Rain Spencer’s jump from The Summer I Turned Pretty to Genuine Fraud marks an exciting new phase in her career. It’s bold, fresh, and completely different from how we know her as Taylor, and we can’t wait to see how she molds herself in this darker world.
