We Were Liars cast, E Lockhart: We Were Liars cast & character guide: Who plays whom in the Prime Video psychological thriller based on the E. Lockhart novel?

Prime Video’s latest psychological thriller, We Were Liars, releases on June 18, 2025, and has grabbed everyone’s attention. The series, based on E. Lockhart’s popular novel of the same name, narrates the story of Cadence Sinclair, who has lost her memory of one summer due to a severe head injury. To recall what had happened to her, she goes back to Beechwood Island.

Apart from Cadence, the series also introduces the whole Sinclair family, who at first glance might seem to be the perfect family who gather around Beechwood Island every summer to spend their vacations. With a stellar ensemble cast, We Were Liars will introduce this tale where the consequences of one mistake change everything for the Sinclairs.

1) Emily Alyn Lind as Cadence Sinclair Eastman

Lind became popular after appearing in Revenge and later went on to play many different roles in shows such as Code Black and Gossip Girl. She has also appeared in movies such as Lights Out, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and Doctor Sleep, among others.

Lind plays Cadence, who, after a head injury, has lost her memory. The series is based on Cadence trying to find out what had caused the injury that made her suffer from amnesia. She is the daughter of Penny Sinclair.

2) Shubham Maheshwari as Gat Patil

Maheshwari plays the character of Gat Patil, who isn’t a part of the Sinclair family but has been visiting Beechwood Island since childhood and is one of the Liars with Cadence and her cousins. He is also the love interest of Cadence.

Maheshwari is a young actor who is getting his big break with Prime Video’s We Were Liars and has appeared in a short film called Haven Dust in 2021.

3) Joseph Zada as Johnny Sinclair Dennis

The next liar is Joseph Zada’s Johnny Sinclair. He is Cadence’s cousin and the oldest grandson of the Sinclair family. The athletic boy doesn’t take things seriously and is known for his thoughtlessness at times.

The Australian actor is just starting and has appeared in a show called Invisible Boys and will also appear in East of Eden. Other than that, Zada is also set to appear in the Hunger Games prequel film, Sunrise on the Reaping, next year.

4) Esther McGregor as Mirren Sinclair Sheffield

The last of the liars is Esther McGregor's Mirren, who is also Cadence’s cousin, as she is the daughter of Penny’s sister, Bess Sinclair. Mirren is one of the kindest among the liars but can also appear to be uptight sometimes.

Apart from We Were Liars, the English actress has also appeared in the Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi and the coming-of-age drama High School. The young actress was also part of the recent Nicole Kidman film, Babygirl.

5) Caitlin FitzGerald as Penny Sinclair

The Masters of Sex actress, Caitlin Fitzgerald, has appeared in numerous popular TV shows such as Inventing Anna, Succession, and New Girl, among others. Not just shows. Fitzgerald was also part of films like The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Mercy.

In We Were Liars, the American actress plays Penny, Cadence’s mother and the middle daughter of the Sinclair family.

5) Candice King as Bess Sinclair

In We Were Liars, Cadence King portrays Bess Sinclair, Mirren’s mother and the youngest daughter of the Sinclair family. King is among the most popular actors on We Were Liars due to her role in the acclaimed fantasy series, Vampire Diaries, and later in its spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies. Her other TV roles also include Supernatural and How I Met Your Mother.

6) Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair

Johnny’s mother, Carrie, is played by Mamie Gummer. She is also the eldest of the three Sinclair daughters. She is also in a long-term relationship with Gat’s uncle, Ed Patil.

Daughter of renowned Hollywood actress Meryl Streep, Gummer has shown her talent in several TV shows, such as in Castle Rock, a show based on a Stephen King-created fictional town. That's not all, as Gummer's TV roles also include several popular shows such as True Detective, Emily Owens, M.D., and The Good Wife. Gummer has also shared the screen with her mother in the film Ricki and the Flash.
