The Summer I Turned Pretty is back with its third and final season, keeping the audience engaged with its exciting plot. The love triangle between Belly, Jeremiah, and Conrad continues even after three seasons.

However, as per series creator Jenny Han, the love triangle part was not the most difficult to write in the new season. In an interview with The Wrap, she revealed that it was the romance between Taylor and Steven that she found the most difficult to figure out.

The couple’s relationship keeps going through various ups and downs, and Han said the writing team needed to come up with a backstory as The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3 begins four years after the events of Season 2:

“That might have been one of the most challenging parts of writing the season, because there’s so many places they can go, and we did have that time gap. We wrote a lot of story that we never even see on screen, just so that we knew what the history was, and we knew where the fault lines were … in the relationship.”

Jenny Han says writing the Taylor and Steven relationship was the most difficult part of The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3

Though the show is based on Jenny Han’s own novel series of the same name, the Taylor and Steven romance is exclusive to the show. In the books, the two are not in a relationship.

Taylor, played by Rain Spencer, is a student at Finch College and is Belly's best friend, while Steven, played by Sean Kaufman, is Belly's brother. Discussing their relationship dynamics in The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 3, Han said:

“It’s a really rich story with a lot of backstory to it, even before the third season, because we knew that Taylor had a crush on Steven since they were little, and she was Belly’s best friend but she never told him or anybody. To me that’s always such juicy fodder for a relationship … the ‘she fell first, he fell harder’ — I think they kind of epitomize that.”

In the new season, Taylor and Steven are having an on-again and off-again romance. Despite being with different partners, they find their way back to each other and end up cheating in their respective relationships. Meanwhile, the show continues to explore the complicated trio of Belly, Jeremiah, and Conrad.

Season 3 marks the final installment of the show, which will eventually reveal if Taylor and Steven end up together, and who Belly chooses in the end. The series finale is scheduled to be released on September 17, 2025.

Apart from Rain Spencer and Sean Kaufman, the show also stars Lola Tung as Belly, Christopher Briney as Conrad, Gavin Casalegno as Jeremiah, Jackie Chung as Laurel Park, Alfredo Narciso as Cleveland Castillo, Colin Ferguson as John Conklin, Tom Everett Scott as Adam Fisher, Isabella Briggs as Denise Russo, and Kristen Connolly as Lucinda Jewel.
