The fandom of The Summer I Turned Pretty is buzzing, and not about the love twist of the show but rather about the engagement ring that Belly was wearing.

As soon as Belly Conklin announced that she was getting married to Jeremiah Fisher in Season 3, Episode 3 (Last Supper), the focus was not on the couple but on the size and shape of the ring. In response to the criticism of Belly’s engagement ring, Lola Tung addressed the issue in interviews shortly after the third season of The Summer I Turned Pretty ran. The 22-year-old told Pedestrian TV that the fan slander was “a little too much” and “very funny” and stated that the design and meaning of the ring was “practical”. She said:

“I love that ring, though. I do. I’m wearing big rings today. I think it’s so them. They’re young, and Jeremiah’s already put his father in debt…”

This statement was made in reference to Jeremiah's financial circumstances in The Summer I Turned Pretty, which makes the choice to purchase an ordinary ring sensible.

“I think it’s beautiful. It’s little, but it’s practical. I think it’s beautiful.”

Lola elaborated on this practicality in a PopSugar Australia interview, saying that Jeremiah was making a considerate and responsible choice — purchasing a ring that was not too costly given their financial situation:

“Jeremiah was trying to be a little smart buying a ring that wasn't crazy expensive. And he knows her style and it's a very practical ring and very beautiful and simple.”

The ring, according to Elle Magazine, is a Fizz Ring, 100-percent recycled solid 14K yellow gold with a white diamond stone of .089 carats. Compared to celebrity engagement rings like Taylor Swift’s, which are noticeably larger and more expensive, this difference is appropriate given the characters' ages, lifestyles, and socioeconomic status. The fact that Jeremiah is a college student in debt provides critical details as to why the ring appears small yet meaningful.

The defence of Lola Tung also touches upon a more serious fan cynicism regarding Jeremiah himself, who has trust issues because of a cheating scandal depicted in The Summer I Turned Pretty. Other fans thought the engagement was Jeremiah trying to rectify his earlier mistakes as opposed to a romantic move. The modesty of the ring thus turned into a symbol of their complicated relationship and youthful, imperfect love.
