The Summer of Songbirds is in development at Hulu

Kristy Woodson Harvey’s The Summer of Songbirds was released in 2023. Two years later, Hulu has picked up the novel for a television adaptation. The streamer has unveiled an official synopsis of the series, which reads:

“The [show] is a story about the power of forged family — the family we choose, the family we fight to keep, again and again. It revolves around three girlfriends and their unbreakable bond forged in their childhood summers spent in North Carolina.”
“Now in their 30s, each grappling with the harsh realities of adulthood, they’re forced to confront secrets and betrayals from both the past and present that threaten to unravel their chosen family.”

The casting details of the show have been kept under wraps for now. Brennan Elizabeth Peters will serve as the writer and executive producer on the project. She is not new to adaptations, as her previous show, The Power, was also based on a novel. Peters’ other credits include the horror drama Sacred Lies and the 2012 film Perry & Emile.

Harvey is attached to the show as an executive producer, along with Aaron Kaplan. She is an acclaimed author who has written 12 books so far, including The Summer of Songbirds. Harvey has earned the bestselling tag from the New York Times, Publishers Weekly, and USA Today. Some of her other popular novels include The Peachtree Bluff, Beach House Rules, and A Happier Life.

The co-executive producers on the show include Tiffany Przybyla Wong and Jaiden Kaplan. It is being produced by 20th Television and Kapital Entertainment. 20th Television’s recent programs include Paradise, Washington Black, Good American Family, and Mid-Century Modern.

Kapital Entertainment is known for producing Watson, The Neighborhood, American Housewife, and The Chi. Hulu has not yet announced the filming and release dates for The Summer of Songbirds.
