The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox premiered on Hulu on August 20, 2025, with its first two episodes, and follows the case of Amanda, an American who went to study in Italy and was accused of murdering her roommate there. The official synopsis of the show, as mentioned by Rotten Tomatoes, reads,
“Centers on Amanda Knox's harrowing journey after being wrongfully imprisoned for her roommate's murder, her battle to prove her innocence and regain her freedom.”
While Amanda and her then-boyfriend, Rafaelle Sollecito, were convicted of murdering Meredith Kercher, they were eventually acquitted in 2011. However, both of them had to spend four years in prison before they could walk free again.
As shown in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, Amanda’s trial had become a media sensation back in 2007 when the case happened, and the news was sensationalized for obvious reasons. The media portrayed Amanda as a woman who was hypersexual, and thus she was subjected to multiple STD tests, and then it was falsely claimed that she had HIV.
Amanda Knox was not HIV positive in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox
One of the key angles of the case set against Amanda was that she was a hyper sexual woman, and it was she who had made her boyfriend, Rafaelle Sollecito, engage in sexual acts with others, and that eventually led to murder. Given this way of assassinating her character, the authorities made Amanda prepare a list of people she had previously slept with, and the list was also leaked by the media.
Scrutiny of Amanda’s personal life played a huge role here, as she was already a victim of discrimination in a foreign land. The release of her sexual partners’ list to the public and her multiple STD tests eventually led to the news that she was apparently HIV positive, which was again a lie.
Since the general population was keenly following Amanda’s case, and the more scandalous it became, the more entertaining it was, media outlets also did not shy away from peddling lies, as shown in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox.
Amanda herself was made to believe that she had HIV, which led her to become even more scared and hope for her release so that she did not have to die in prison. Given the fact that Amanda was an American woman who was living her life on her own terms in Italy did not really sit well with the authorities, and once they saw the chance, they not only falsely accused her of murder but also made sure to portray her in as negative a light as possible.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox can be streamed on Hulu.
