Hulu's latest eight-part docu-series, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, has sparked a renewed interest in the 2007 murder case of Meredith Kercher and the wrongful conviction of her roommate, Amanda Knox.
Knox, now a journalist, author, and activist, has struggled to separate herself from a crime she had no connection to for two decades now. The latest Hulu series also shines a spotlight on her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, a fellow Italian student who was also accused of Kercher's murder.
Played by Italian actor Giuseppe De Domenico, Knox's former boyfriend faces an equally brutal investigation for Kercher's murder in the recently released two episodes. Like Knox, Raffaele Sollecito was also acquitted for his crimes in 2015, following which he has maintained a private life. Per a 2017 BBC report, he lived in Italy and ran his own business.
More on The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox in our story.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox: All about Amanda Knox's relationship with Raffaele Sollecito
While Amanda Knox has actively worked to reclaim her life after her wrongful imprisonment in 2007, there was another (and often overshadowed) victim of the faults of the Italian legal system, Knox's then-23-year-old boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito.
The first two episodes of The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox introduce us to Raffaele Sollecito, an Italian computer engineering student in 2007. The premiere painted the vibrant and colourful life of Sollecito, who met an American exchange student in October 2007 at a concert, where they fell in love. Their romance was quick, and the couple was anticipating the beginning of a momentous relationship.
However, destiny had other plans as Meredith Kercher was found dead in her apartment, just eight days after Sollecito started dating Amanda Knox. On November 1, 2007, Knox found her roommate's door locked from the inside and drops of blood in the living room, following which she went to get Raffaele Sollecito. The couple found Kercher's dead body, who was stabbed 47 times. Since Knox and Sollecito were primarily each other's alibi, having spent the night of the murder together, the Italian student also became a key suspect in Kercher's murder.
As seen in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, Raffaele Sollecito was wrongfully convicted for Kercher's murder and spent four years in prison (2009-2015) in solitary confinement. After facing multiple trials, convictions, and reconvictions, Sollecito was acquitted in 2015 after the Supreme Court of Italy found that Rudy Guede was the sole killer.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox: Are Amanda and Raffaele Sollecito still together?
Sollecito completed his computer engineering degree in prison and maintained contact with his girlfriend through letters and notes. While Knox and Sollecito remained in constant contact in prison, their relationship eventually ended sometime in 2009, as per ABC News.
Unlike Amanda Knox, who serves as an executive producer on The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, Raffaele Sollecito has maintained a private life, living outside the public eye, and is currently working as a computer engineer. Surprisingly, he made an appearance on the premiere of the Hulu series and also posed with his ex-girlfriend and the stars.
During a handful of interviews that he has done after his acquittal, Sollecito revealed that he talks with Knox occasionally, but they do not discuss the case. While his friends and family advised Sollecito to maintain his distance from Knox, he does not blame her for his accusation and consequent imprisonment, but instead blames the incompetent Italian legal system.
In 2012, he also published his book Honor Bound: My Journey to Hell and Back With Amanda Knox. One of the excerpts from the synopsis reads as follows:
“Over the next four years, Raffaele was the only solid alibi Amanda had for the night of the murder. He came under unrelenting pressure — from his own family and lawyers as much as the police and prosecution — to change his testimony and stop vouching for her. But he wouldn’t do it. He refused to testify against her to save his own skin, because he knew she would be lost forever.”
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox has shed an unusual spotlight on Sollecito, who stood by her side during difficult times and refused to falsely testify against her to save himself.
The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is now streaming on Hulu.
