The mission: A mother's resolve in The Walking Dead: Dead City

The series begins with Maggie's son Hershel being taken by an ex-Savior known as the Croat. Persuaded to find him, Maggie pursues Negan, despite their dubious history. Negan, who is currently a fugitive from the New Babylon Federation for his past actions, is keen on helping if Maggie promises to put a young girl named Ginny under his care.

Their journey to Manhattan reveals a city cut off from the mainland, swept with the dead and the living who have built their world of anarchy, danger, loneliness, and terror.

While Maggie and Negan head towards the city, they are greeted by several tribes of survivors, for instance, the Tribespeople, who are in combat against the Croat's despotism. The two's past still follows their actions, and trust is something they cannot afford.

Negan's brutal nature comes back to haunt him during battles, like a brutal fight with another survivor, exhibiting how Negan battles his past and present selves.

Confrontations and consequences in The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1

As Maggie and Negan venture further into the world of crime in the city, they carry out an attack mission on Madison Square Garden to save Hershel and take down the Croat. The Croat is, however, ahead of them, relocating his cults from the stadium and admitting walkers while utilizing the lights and sound technologies for herding walkers into the Tribespeople.

Amidst the chaos, there are revelations: Maggie's true motive for asking Negan for help was to trade him for Hershel's release from The Croat, something which she had been keeping hidden from the beginning. Negan, seeing this ruse, chooses not to strike back, seeing the extent of Maggie's desperation.
