Amazon Prime Video has officially renewed We Were Liars for a second season. This means viewers will have another chance to learn more about what happened to Cadence Sinclair Eastman.
The first season, which debuted in June 2025, followed the Sinclairs after they arrived at Beechwood Island for a big celebration. It began on a cheerful note as the family enjoyed their riches. However, it all came crashing down as they began arguing over petty differences, creating a rift that they may never fully recover from.
Cadence was one of the survivors of a tragedy on the island, but her character is not just a spoiled teenager from a wealthy family. The first season teased what she might be capable of. She tried to piece her life back together after being left ashore on the beach with no memories of what happened to her since the Summer ’16 celebration.
The majority of the first season showed Cadence trying to recall what happened to her and "the Liars," whom she grew fond of two years ago. She suffered from amnesia, but her family didn't share enough details about her recent past to satisfy her curious mind. That's why the second season might be crucial to see how her discoveries shape her future.
Here's what happened in We Were Liars Season 1

Julie Plec & Carina Adly Mackenzie developed We Were Liars based on E. Lockhart's book of the same name, though they changed some elements to shape their adaptation.
As mentioned earlier, the first season mainly showed Cadence trying to remember what happened to her in summer '16 on Beechwood Island. It followed her attempts to piece together the details of everything that transpired until the fateful night when she found herself stranded on the beach. That's why the story is told through the eyes of an unreliable narrator.
Based on her recollections, Cadence was on the island for a celebration with Mirren and Johnny, along with their parents, Penny, Carrie, and Bess. The gathering turned sour as people revealed their secrets or resentments. It appeared that Harris was pitting his daughters and grandchildren against each other, leading them to bicker over trivial matters.

Most of the conflict boiled down to the family's inheritance. Harris, the family patriarch, seemed to be testing them to see who satisfied him. The story takes several twists, including those involving the father-son duo, Ed and Gat. Ed joined the Sinclairs as Carrie's long-time partner, while his son, Gat, had a fleeting relationship with Cadence.
Based on the recap, Harris did not want the two to be with Carrie and Cadence, so he found ways to keep them apart. By the end of the first season, Harris gave Cadence a black pearl necklace. This led her to realize that Mirren, Johnny, and Gat, dubbed "the Liars," had died in a fire they had set at the family property on the island.
"The Liars" Cadence had been seeing in the present were actually their ghosts haunting her. They had tried to burn down the property, thinking it would mend the Sinclairs’ broken bonds. However, the fire claimed Mirren, Johnny, and Gat's lives, while Cadence was thrown into the water from the explosion. She realized she had survived while searching for the necklace, which Gat had died protecting.
At the final moments of We Were Liars Season 1, Cadence decided not to speak to a magazine reporter. Instead, she rode away from the island, leaving the necklace behind.
We Were Liars is available to stream on Prime Video.
