It's official! We are going back to the Beechwood Island for another Sinclair mystery in We Were Liars Season 2. Amazon Prime Video's psychological thriller series, based on E. Lockhart's best-selling 2014 eponymous novel, has been renewed for a second season.

We Were Liars novel took the booktok by a storm, following which it was adapted into a series which debuted on June 18, 2025. The first season follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman and her tight-knit group (called the Liars), who spend an ideal Summer on Cady's grandfather's private Island. However, a mysterious accident changes the Liars' lives forever.

We Were Liars Season 1 gained popularity on the Internet, especially after that shocking and twisted finale. While the show's debut season neatly wrapped Cady's story, it featured a subtle hint for We Were Liars Season 2.

The sophomore season of We Were Liars will be based on E. Lockhart’s Family of Liars, a prequel to the 2014 novel.

More on this in our story.

We Were Liars Season 2 will be based on E. Lockhart’s Family of Liars

You are certainly not the only one still thinking about the spooky interaction between Aunt Carrie and her dead son Johnny in the We Were Liars Season 1 finale. As E. Lockhart revealed to Deadline, the author and creators deliberately left that breadcrumb for their audiences for We Were Liars Season 2:

“If you watch We Were Liars all the way til the end and you watch the little coda, you can see that that coda tips to the start of Family of Liars. We have not forgotten about what’s going on with Johnny and Carrie.”

Lockhart's mystery saga of the Sinclair family seems to be expanding to new heights. Following the literary success of We Were Liars in 2014, the author penned a prequel novel titled Family of Liars. The impressive run of Cady and the Liars in Season 1 paved the way for We Were Liars Season 2, which will be based on Lockhart's Family of Liars.

The prequel book follows the lives of the Sinclair sisters when they were younger, especially the Summer when Carrie turned 17. The book delves into the lives of Carrie and the other aunts when they were young and reckless. As revealed by showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie, Season 2 will take a different approach and will instead focus on the lives of the Sinclair moms and aunts, and 'add another generation to the story'.

What can you expect from We Were Liars Season 2?

The We Were Liars Season 1 finale revealed the shocking truth about that fateful night in the Summer of 16.

Cady finally learns the truth about that house fire and that she was the only Liar who survived that fateful night. All the other Liars, including Gat, Mirren and Johnny, perished in the house fire. While the finale did not reveal how Cady was seeing the spirit-Liars throughout Season 1, it was clear that she was not ready to move on from their deaths. However, Gat finally makes Cady realise that she was not responsible for their deaths, and she breaks free from Beechwood Island and escapes on a boat.

Now, coming back to E. Lockhart’s 'coda' in the Season 1 finale. While it was revealed that only Cady could see the spirit-Liars, the final scene saw Carrie acknowledging her son's ghost. Carrie says that she thought Johnny would have 'left' by now, to which he replies, “I don’t think I can.”

This chilling final scene sets the stage for We Were Liars Season 2, which will explore Carrie's backstory. The final scene was quite faithful to Family of Liars, where Carrie narrates her stories from adulthood to her dead son.

The premise is surely interesting, and we might even learn more about Johnny and why he cannot leave the Beechwood Island even after his death.
