Season 4 of The Witcher is arriving with more than one visible change. The biggest is Geralt, of course, now played by Liam Hemsworth. But right beside that shift, another one appears. Vesemir will not return with Kim Bodnia. The part now belongs to Peter Mullan, an actor whose career stretches across decades and includes roles in Outlander: Blood of My Blood and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
The decision was not framed as a bold creative choice. It was announced through Entertainment Weekly, in the middle of a wider cover story. The explanation sounded simple: Vesemir had to be present for events that the writers already planned. And because of that, production could not leave the role behind.
Showrunner Lauren Hissrich informed EW:
"Honestly, we didn't think we would see him again after that season. Then in the writers' room, it's like, 'Well, wait, what if we start to bring the Witchers back in because there's some future events that we know we want Vesemir for in the series?'"
This shows how the series is balancing two things at once. On one side, there is continuity in the narrative. On the other, there are practical issues behind the scenes that sometimes demand changes. The Witcher is not the first franchise to go through this. Still, each time it happens, it feels a bit unusual.
Why the recast happened
The reason for the replacement is connected to timing. Kim Bodnia was already confirmed for F1, the racing film led by Brad Pitt. In that movie he plays Kaspar Smolinski, a team principal. When the Hollywood strikes pushed the schedule forward, filming took longer than expected. That delay clashed directly with the production of The Witcher.
Lauren Hissrich, who leads the show, explained that she spoke with Bodnia. He was devastated by the situation, since he liked the character and wanted to continue. Nothing in the report suggests disagreement or tension. It was simply a conflict that could not be solved.

How the transition was prepared
When Peter Mullan came into the picture in The Witcher, the idea was not to erase what had been built before. Hissrich noted that he wanted to know what he should keep from Bodnia’s interpretation. He even listened to the accent used in season 2 and worked on adjusting his own speech. It is a detail, but one that connects the two portrayals.
Hissrich shared:
So Peter came in, and what I think is always great when really seasoned actors come in and they know they're replacing someone is, 'What do you want me to carry over? What do you want me to bring new?' Kim has a very distinctive accent. [Mullan] had listened to that accent. He had said, 'How do I change my accent to make this a little bit more like his?'"
That approach was described as professional. It gave space for continuity. Audiences will see a new face, but some elements will remain, making the change less abrupt than it could have been.
Peter Mullan’s background
Mullan has been working since the 1980s. His credits spread through film, theater, and television. In Ozark he played Jacob Snell, a crime boss with a strong presence. In Westworld he was James Delos, part of the show’s deeper mythology. He appeared as King Durin III in The Rings of Power, leading the dwarves, and as Jacob MacKenzie in Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
This combination of roles shows range. Each of them required intensity, a kind of authority on screen. That history explains why producers considered him fit to step into the role of Vesemir.

The Witcher story of Vesemir
The character had already been expanded outside of the main series. Netflix released the animated movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf in 2021. In that film, Theo James voiced a young Vesemir. The plot included the fall of Kaer Morhen, the fortress where Witchers of the School of the Wolf were trained.
That story built part of the foundation for why Vesemir matters. It established his connection to the world and to Geralt. Bringing him back in live action was tied to narrative choices. Writers needed him for what comes next.
Season 4 timeline
The new season of The Witcher is scheduled to premiere on October 30, 2025. There will be eight episodes. It also marks the first appearance of Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, following Henry Cavill’s exit. The dual change is clear. Both Geralt and Vesemir now have different actors, making season 4 a turning point in the production.
Hissrich said the decision to reintroduce Vesemir was linked to events that the writers had already outlined. The recast was not optional. It was required to keep the story consistent.

Continuity in change
At this stage, Vesemir exists in three different forms inside the same franchise. First, the animated version from Nightmare of the Wolf, voiced by Theo James. Then, the live action portrayal by Kim Bodnia in season 2. And now, Peter Mullan taking over in season 4. Each version adds something, but none cancels the others.
This is also how The Witcher has grown. Across books, games, animation, and live action, the same names appear again and again. Sometimes they look slightly different, sometimes they sound different too. The recast of Vesemir fits into this pattern. Change has been part of the design from the start. The important detail is that the figure of the mentor remains central, no matter who is in the role.
