Lauren Hissrich, who is the showrunner and one of the executive producers on The Witcher, recently cleared the air about Henry Cavill’s exit from the show after its three seasons.

In 2019, the Man of Steel star first appeared on screen as Geralt of Rivia. Over the years, he won over the fans of Andrzej Sapkowski's eponymous books and the subsequent video game adaptations. That's why in 2023, when Henry Cavill announced that he won't return to play the lead character, fans were sorely disappointed.

It's not uncommon for fans to have strong feelings for an actor playing a certain role. They cannot imagine anyone else replacing that actor. So, Cavill's departure reportedly led to them getting upset about the show's return without him at the front and centre. As the show is gearing up for the premiere of its fourth season, Lauren Hissrich addressed this topic.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, she spoke about Henry Cavill's exit, saying:

"He had plans for other roles that he really wanted to commit himself to. And for us, you don't want to hold someone and force them to be doing something that they don't want to do. I think that's why it felt like a really symbiotic decision."

Henry Cavill previously addressed his departure from The Witcher through a statement

In 2022, Henry Cavill made a cameo appearance in the DCEU film Black Adam, led by then DC star Dwayne Johnson. Sources suggest that he was hoping to put on his Superman suit to return to the fray in the future of DC's adaptations. However, his dream never materialized since the DCEU was eventually dissolved, paving the way for the new DCU.

The DCEU projects were said to be one of the reasons Cavill planned to leave The Witcher after its third season. That month, he made his feelings known through a statement shared on his social media. In the caption, he said,

"My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventure. In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf."

The Witcher star further said,

"As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men."

In the end, he wished luck to Liam Hemsworth, who was taking over the role.

"Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find."

Around that time, he appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and told interviewer Josh Horowitz,

“It’s just about belief. If you believe what you’re doing is the right thing, then you’ll be able to keep on doing it. If you realize you’re doing the wrong thing, that’s when you stop doing the wrong thing. You don’t just keep on going, because that leads down a dark path.”

According to Polygon, Cavill didn't clarify what role he was talking about, but some fans believed it might have been about his departure from working on The Witcher.
