The Witcher watch order: How to watch every season and spin-off in the right order

Netflix’s The Witcher is not another fantasy series. This is an entire world teeming with weird magic, monsters, and a bunch of weirdos. To be honest, unless you watch it in the order it was meant to be, you will probably feel like you were trying to fit together a jigsaw puzzle with half the pieces missing.

Some tales take place long before Geralt of Rivia ever exists, and some tales follow directly after him in terms of timeline and storyline. Watching the series in reverse order could spoil major plot twists or fail to include crucial elements of the Continent's backstory. So, here we are going to take you through the ideal watch order and tell you what is what and how they relate to each other in this guide.

1. Season 1 (2019)

Start here. The first season centers on Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), a mutant monster hunter. It also kicked off the introduction of two other key characters: Yennefer of Vengerberg, a powerful sorceress with a traumatic history, and Princess Cirilla (Ciri), bound to Geralt by destiny and its magic.

Season 1 is jumping around across timelines. Geralt’s story, Yennefer’s journey from a poor, bullied girl to a mage, and Ciri’s escape from a destroyed kingdom are all shown at different points in time. The timelines finally connect in the last episodes. This season lays the foundation for all future events, and skipping it will leave you lost.

It is the main starting point for the Netflix Witcher timeline. Even though the timelines are kind of messy, this very season introduces the characters and the rules of the world.

2. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf (2021- Animated Film)

After Season 1, watch this animated movie. This prequel takes place years before Geralt's story and follows Vesemir, Geralt's mentor. We see how Vesemir became a Witcher as well as what happened to Kaer Morhen (the Witcher stronghold). It also explains why there are so few Witchers left in Geralt’s time.

Even though it is animated, it is not a “light” movie. It has action, magic, and some emotional moments that add depth to the main series. Watching it after Season 1 helps you understand the Witcher Brotherhood better before they appear in later seasons.

It is better to meet Vesemir in the main series first (Season 2), so this film feels like an extra layer of his backstory.

3. Season 2 (2021)

Season 1 ended with Ciri finding Geralt, and Season 2 picks up with the two heading to his home at Kaer Morhen. And it is there that Ciri starts training with Vesemir, only to gradually discover the full extent of her powers. Meanwhile, Yennefer deals with the aftermath of the Battle of Sodden Hill and the price of her ruthless magic.

By this point, you will understand the world enough to follow the more detailed political and magical plots without confusion.

4. The Witcher: Blood Origin (2022–Limited Prequel Series)

So this four-episode show takes place approximately 1,200 years prior to Geralt's story. It provides some background about what happened before the Conjunction of the Spheres, when monsters, humans, and elves all shared one world, and even how the first Witcher emerged.

Watching it after Season 2 makes the references in later seasons more meaningful, without overwhelming you with too much history too soon.

5. Season 3 (2023 – Split into Two Volumes)

Season 3 continues Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri’s journey as they face threats from all sides: mages, kings, and mysterious forces all want control over Ciri. The bond between the three becomes stronger, but danger grows too.

This season also marks the final one with Henry Cavill as Geralt before the role is taken over by Liam Hemsworth in Season 4. It focuses heavily on politics, magic, and Ciri’s destiny. The storytelling is more connected than in earlier seasons, with less jumping between timelines.

At this point, you will have all the details tracked down from previous seasons and spin-offs. So, you can be invested in the stakes and character dynamics.

6. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep (Animated Film – 2025)

Geralt rolls into a seaside village haunted by killer sirens and mysterious ocean monsters.

They attack ships and pull sailors towards certain death. While investigating, he discovers secrets involving ancient magic, local politics, and an unexpected personal connection, as well as battle sequences underwater. Bringing together all these concepts, this film gives an exciting finale treat!

Even though Sirens of the Deep takes place between Season 1 and Season 2, it is best to view it last. That way, its events will not interfere with the main series' pacing. Furthermore, its events will come across more clearly to you.
