The Gilded Age Season 3 Episode 4 finally depicted the dreaded marriage of Gladys Russell (Taissa Farmiga) to Hector, the Duke of Buckingham. Although her mother, Bertha (Carrie Coon), wanted her daughter to get married to Hector, Gladys spent most of this season, as well as the previous season, protesting against the marriage.
After the recent episode of The Gilded Age Season 3, we see that Gladys has no option but to go through the marriage, which made her unhappy and disappointed in her parents, especially her mother. During an interview with Deadline, Farmiga talked about the anger Gladys has toward her mother due to the wedding.
She shared:
"I think with her mom, there’s definitely more anger. It’s more of a fiery feeling inside."
More on this in our story.
Taissa Farmiga from The Gilded Age talked about Gladys’s resentment towards her mother
As mentioned, in the recent episode of The Gilded Age Season 3, Bertha’s wish was fulfilled after she was able to successfully marry her daughter off to the Duke of Buckingham, who presently has set sail to England with her husband. However, while Bertha might be happy about the marriage, her daughter, Gladys, did not want to proceed.
She tried to protest, but ultimately, since no one was on her side, she had to go ahead and get married. This made her angry and disappointed in everyone close to her, including her mother.
In the same interview, Farmiga stated:
"I think at that moment it’s more numbness than any sort of other heated emotion. She’s been feeling so much hatred, so much anger, so much sadness, so much disappointment these last few episodes. There’s disappointment in Billy Carlton [Matt Walker] for not fighting for her and not being the partner that she needed him to be. And her father George [Morgan Spector], the other man in her life, who is saying one thing and doing the opposite."
She continued:
"He said that she could marry for love. She’s deceived and disappointed, and of course she’s fu_king pissed at the mother. But I think in that moment, the pressures of all of the voices around her, all of the people telling her what she should do, what she shouldn’t do, I think she’s just numb. She can’t fear anything anymore."
Taissa Farmiga from The Gilded Age is hopeful about her character in the second half of Season 3
Given how everything unfolded with Gladys' wedding to the Duke of Buckingham, it might have seemed that she would be trapped in a resentful and unhappy marriage. However, recently, while talking to TVInsider, Farmiga teased about how, after a season of disappointments and unhappiness, there might be happier times in Gladys’s life ahead.
She shared:
"That’s been the case for the past several seasons, but the second half of the season, everything burns down and then there’s the tiniest little like sproutlings that grow, and that’s Gladys’s happiness that’s just starting to pop out. Luckily, she’s fortunate to come back from the terrible blow at the middle of the season."
Therefore, while Gladys is angry at her mother, Bertha, for the arranged marriage she had to go through, all is not lost for Farmiga as her character arc might be heading toward a better situation in The Gilded Age.
