HBO’s The Last of Us is on its way to wrap up its eventful season 2 with just one episode left. Just like season 1, the new season maintained the intensity and compelling narrative, if not elevating it with the most heartbreaking death of the franchise. Furthermore, with the introduction of Abby (played by Kaitlyn Dever), a character from the popular game franchise by Naughty Dog, made it more exciting.

A third season is already in development before season 2 has even concluded, depicting that Abby and Ellie’s journey is nowhere close to an end, and also because Abby’s story is yet to be explored further. Moreover, recently, one of the co-creators of The Last of Us, Craig Mazin, further teased about a season 4 to conclude the vast story of the post-apocalyptic show, as season 3 won’t be enough.

While talking to Collider, he shared:

"Yeah, and it would take forever. There are natural perforations in the narrative where you can go, “Okay, let’s tear it here.” I think there’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2, just because the manner of that narrative and the opportunities it affords us are a little different."

He also added:

"But certainly, there’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome."

More on this in our story.

The Last Of Us showrunner teases Season 4 ahead of Season 2 finale

Although The Last of Us is adapted from the game by Naughty Dog, it still has taken some creative decisions to flesh out the narrative and character arc, making the story coherent. For instance, the storyline of Eugene was an added element that further helped the narrative. While these decisions help the story, the show hasn’t changed any major events yet, and hence, we witnessed Joel’s heartbreaking death early in the season.

Since this season of The Last of Us is coming to an end, the new season will further expand Ellie’s story and also might include Abby’s as well, since not much of was shown in season 2 other than her killing Joel. As showrunner Mazin said in his comment above, season 3 might also have more episodes than the current season, implying that it might have the same episode count as season 1.

To add to his above comment, he said:

"The thing about Joel’s death is that it’s so impactful. It’s such a narrative nuclear bomb that it’s hard to wander away from it. We can’t really take a break and move off to the side and do a Bill and Frank story. I’m not sure that will necessarily be true for Season 3. I think we’ll have a little more room there."

While talking about having more to explore in season 3, he also teased the final season to be season 4 to conclude the story effectively, as mentioned above.

More about The Last of Us

The penultimate episode of The Last of Us season 2 revealed why Ellie and Joel’s relationship looked strained in the season. The reason being Eugene’s death by Joel's hands and also the revelation of what happened between Joel and the Fireflies.

The flashback scene in the episode was an emotional moment between Ellie and Joel as Ellie, in the end, told him she would try to forgive him for hiding the truth about the Fireflies. The flashback made Joel’s death more heartbreaking, as we saw in the earlier episodes that Joel and Ellie were beginning to warm up to each other again, before Abby took her revenge on him. While there’s only one episode left of season 2 of this post-apocalyptic series, this is not the end of Ellie and Abby’s story as season 3 is already in the works, and as shared by Craig Mazin, we might also get a season 4 to conclude the HBO series.

The Last of Us Season 2 is available for streaming on Max.
