Mindhunter is considered one of the most critically acclaimed shows on Netflix. However, despite its popularity, the show has not returned to the screens since the conclusion of its second season in 2019.

Though Netflix never officially canceled the psychological crime thriller, director David Fincher previously stated that the show was over. However, now six years after the show’s end, actor Holt McCallany, who played one of the leads, Bill Tench, has shared a positive update about the future of the series.

In an interview with CBR, McCallany revealed that Mindhunter could return in the form of feature films. He said that he met David Fincher a few months ago, who is planning to create three two-hour movies based on the show, and the writers have already started working on the scripts:

“So look, you know, I had a meeting with David Fincher in his office a few months ago, and he said to me that there is a chance that it may come back as three two-hour movies, but I think it's just a chance. I know there are writers that are working, but you know, David has to be happy with scripts.”

Holt McCallany added that though work has begun on the Mindhunter movies’ scripts, nothing has been finalized yet, as a number of things need to be aligned for the project to come together. Meanwhile, he is willing to reprise his role as BSU’s special agent Bill Tench:

“And I felt very fortunate and privileged to have gotten to do that show at all. I would love it if it were to return. I think, like I said, you know, he gave me a little bit of hope when I had that meeting with him, but the sun, the moon, and the stars would all have to align.”

Sharing another positive update about Mindhunter’s future, Holt said the movies would be made for Netflix, which also aired the show, and hence, the logistics part may not be as difficult. The actor concluded by saying that the fate of the movies will ultimately depend on whether David Fincher is happy with the scripts:

“Those movies would also be for Netflix. So I think that in terms of dates and logistics, it could all be worked out, but it has to do, you know, with David really having the time and the inclination and being happy, you know, with the material. And, you know, that's a big question mark.”

Mindhunter premiered in 2017 and revolved around the agents of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit who interviewed and investigated convicted serial killers. The show became famous for providing a deep insight into the psyche of criminals and for Fincher’s impeccable direction.

The second season of the show came out in 2019, and ever since, fans have been demanding its return, though there have been no official announcements from Netflix.

Apart from Holt, the series stars Jonathan Groff as Holden Ford, Anna Torv as Wendy Carr, Stacey Roca as Nancy Tench, Cotter Smith as Robert Shepard, Joe Tuttle as Gregg Smith, Hannah Gross as Debbie Mitford, and Albert Jones as Jim Barney.

Mindhunter Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming on Netflix.
