Lena Dunham’s Too Much premiered on July 10, 2025, and tells the story of Jessica (Megan Stalter), who, after a turbulent end to her previous relationship, goes to London to start afresh. There, she meets the rock singer, Felix (Will Sharpe), with whom she begins a relationship.

Just like their relationship, Sharpe’s Felix is far from the perfect and cliched rom-com lead, as he is as troubled as Jess herself. Their relationship is nothing like a rom-com relationship as it's too raw to be one, as Felix has a damaged past that hampers his present relationships, including Jess, with whom he feels a real connection. Several moments depict Felix’s struggle of being in a relationship and being truthful in that relationship, which makes Jess unhappy at times.

Here’s a list of 7 Felix moments from Lena Dunham’s Too Much that depict how different he is from the cliched rom-com.

These 7 Felix moments from Lena Dunham’s Too Much were far from the rom-com cliche

7) Felix declines to kiss Jess

In a perfect rom-com, a kiss is how it ends when a guy drops off the girl at her house. But Felix defies the first rom-com cliche in Too Much when he drops Jess off at her home.

She tells him why she came to London and about her ex cheating on her as they get acquainted with each other and walk to Jess’s home. At the end, Jess invites him to her house and even tries to kiss him, but Felix refuses the kiss by telling her that he was already seeing someone else.

6) Shows his vulnerability at the wrong time (Episode 3)

Felix’s introduction seemed like the perfect rom-com cliché brooding artist in Too Much. However, he quickly gets over the cliches when he does not hesitate to show his vulnerability in front of Jess, who might not be as interested in knowing as she should have been, revealing himself at the wrong time, while a rom-com is all about timing.

But, while watching Paddington and getting emotional, he still ends up telling more about himself, like his past, and how, after being sober, he has been struggling with accepting all of it. This moment takes away the mysterious artist cliche and makes Felix a more humane character with lots of issues, just like Jess.

5) Felix’s many relationships (Episode 5)

From the beginning of Too Much, Felix was introduced as already being with someone. However, after meeting Jess and spending a night with her, he breaks up with the woman. In the subsequent episodes, it is revealed that Felix’s dating history is too long.

For instance, in episode 5 of Too Much, Jess meets three women with the same name, Polly, the name of one of Felix’s ex-girlfriends, whose name he has tattooed on his body. The scene makes Jess more insecure when she finds Felix’s name tattooed on one of the women, indicating that Felix is clearly a red flag and far away from a rom-com lead.

4) Felix does not reply to Jess’s confession (Episode 6)

Neither Jess nor Felix adheres to the rom-com cliches as they both have messy pasts to deal with, which makes their present relationships a little tricky. For instance, while Felix is always there to comfort Jess when she feels down, he is still unable to come to terms with his issues. Therefore, in episode 6 of Too Much, when Jess confesses her feelings to him, he does not say it back as he tells her that he does not actually know how to say it back, making Jess feel more heartbroken.

3) Felix cheats on Jess (Episode 7)

Another Felix moment from Too Much that depicts how far away he is from a cliched rom-com guy is how he behaves with Jess and his cheating incident. In episode 7, after a fight with Auggie, Felix decides to move in with Jess, but due to a brief fight with her, he leaves and stays with Polly.

Polly tries to draw a wedge between Jess and Felix by telling him to come back to her, but Felix does not reciprocate the same feelings. Although he did not stay with Polly, his anger with Jess had not subsided, and he still ended up cheating on her with an older woman.

2) Felix and Jess' breakup (Episode 8)

Their messy relationship hits roadblock after roadblock in Too Much. While Felix did not cheat on Jess with Polly, he still cheated and with her dog, Astrid’s death, Jess blames everything as being his fault. He cheated on her and let her dog die without Jess seeing her for the last time, making her feel angry and heartbroken. After this, Jess breaks up with him.

The relationship, and also Jess and Felix, are far from anything that a cliched romance would serve as their story is too raw and messy to resemble a perfect narrative, fitting in the mould of a cliched rom-com.

1) Felix asks Jess how long she wants to be married (Episode 10)

A perfectly clichéd rom-com would end with the perfect wedding of the lead characters. However, Too Much does not give us that cliched end of Felix and Jess’s story, and there might still be so much to explore in their chaotic relationship.

At the end of Too Much, Jess gets to marry Felix, with whom she is really in love, but Felix’s question of asking Jess about how long she wants to stay like this suggests so much about what the future might hold for the two. It will still be chaotic and turbulent as the duo and we will have to deal with more of their own struggles while navigating their relationship, depicting a not-so-rom-com way of ending the story.
